"Govt. is there to investigate only those crimes committed on its own fans"

(October 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella addressing the media today (16 Oct), lamented that nearly 10 days have elapsed since the assassination of Major Gen. Janaka Perera, but the Govt. and its police have not made any headway in its investigations. Still they are clueless. But, on the assassination attempt much later on its own Minister Maithripala Sirisena, the Police had made major breakthroughs: even the details of the suspect are known.

This is the hallmark characterising all the Govt.’s investigations from the time Opposition M.P. Raviraj was murdered. Even in the assassinations of Opposition M.P.s, Joseph Pararajasingham and Maheswaran, the Govt. has not made known the results of its investigations. In the Raviraj murder, the Govt. has not yet released the Scotland Yard report. In Joseph Pararajasingham killing, TNA M.P. Sambandan gave the list of the suspects to the President, who has still not taken any action. In Maheswaran‘s murder, it was revealed that a member of a Minister’s security was allegedly involved. Even on this murder, no information has been forthcoming.

It is becoming increasingly clear that this Govt. shows no concern for the people who elected it to power nor its war heroes. The Govt. is fully aware that, but for the early war victories under Major Gen. Janaka Perera , the recent victories the Govt. claims, could not have become a reality, because, it is when Janaka was the Army Chief that the initiative was wrested from the LTTE . Despite all these contributions towards the country’s progress, the Govt. not only refused security, but also refused airlifting of the remains of Janaka and his wife to Anuradhapura dishonoring its solemn promise given earlier to do so.

Answering questions posed by the media on the Indian protests, he explained, that the whole problem was created by the President Rajapakse’s Govt. by lying profusely in the Mahinda Chintana which included the promise to bring about a political solution to the ethnic issue within three months of its advent to power with the participation of all parties. The Govt. did not honour this promise. India’s protest is not to establish an Eelam, but to establish a political solution without waging a war that is killing innocent citizens
