(October 20, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Thousands of fishermen today staged a massive rally with black flags to protest against the ethnic genocide of Lankan Tamils. Also, nearly 50,000 fishermen struck work by not venturing into sea.

Starting from the playground at Punitha Anthoniar School, 5,000 fishermen took out a rally with black flags and reached the Kanyakumari Railway Station via Gandhi Mandapam.

Once again from the railway station, they staged a peaceful rally to express their solidarity with ethnic Tamils who were allegedly being killed by the Lankan Army. The protesters also condemned on the wanton killings of Tamilnadu fishermen by the Lankan Navy in midsea.

Fishermen living in coastal villages from Kanyakumari to Manakudi did not venture into sea to strongly condemn the Lankan government for the shooting of innocent fishermen by their Navy. During the protest rally, slogans were raised against the Lankan government and to express sympathy for Eelam Tamils.

Due to the flash strike by fishermen, 400 mechanised boats in Chinamuttom fishing harbour and thousands of fiberglass boats and catamarans were tethered along the coast without being put to sea. Fishing activity came to an abrupt standstill in Kanyakumari for nearly 50,000 fishermen struck work to take part in the protest rally.
