(October 02, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The absence of the AIADMK and the PMK in the protest fast organised here today by the CPI to condemn the killing of Sri Lankan Tamils has given rise to speculation that centre around the rise of Vijayakanth’s DMDK.
The AIADMK, whose supremo J Jayalalithaa herself had announced that it would participate in the State-wide protest, may have been put off by the DMDK’s domination of the proceedings here right from the morning.
At any rate, the wordy exchanges (through the media) between Jayalalithaa and Vijayakanth in the past make it clear that there cannot be any easy rapprochement between the two even for the sake of political convenience.
Ditto is the case between the PMK and the DMDK. Dr Ramadoss is a sworn enemy of the filmi culture that Vijayakanth is deemed to represent. This morning, led by their presidium chairman Panrutti Ramachandran, cadres of DMDK attended the demonstration in large numbers, outnumbering the activists of other outfits.
They also raised slogans expressing their support to the Lankan Tamils and hailing their leader Vijayakanth as the future Chief Minister of the State. Perhaps informed of this, the AIADMK and the PMK abstained from the protest.
The situation was no different in other parts of Tamilnadu, where none of the activists of the AIADMK took part in the fast organised by the Communists.
However, CPI State secretary D Pandian said in his address during the inauguration of the protest that the AIADMK and PMK had said that they would participate in the day-long demonstration.
‘AIADMK senior leader Muthusamy and PMK president G K Mani will take part in the protest fast. We thank them for their support to our attempt to save the Lankan Tamils,’ he said.
As the AIADMK did not show up (at least till around 1.30 p.m.), political circles are abuzz with rumours that the main opposition party was not interested in joining hands with the Communists for the forthcoming Parliamentary polls, as they (Left parties) are reportedly interested in forging an alliance with the DMDK.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, LDMK president Vijaya T Rajendar, Nationalist Congress party leader Tindivanam Ramamurthy and other leaders take part in the protest.
Varadarajan absent
It was earlier announced in the protest that CPI-M State secretary N Varadarajan would take part. However, he did not turn up reportedly due to his health condition. However, Central Committee member of the party W R Varadarajan and activists participated. - Sri Lanka Guardian
