Peace the only option to alleviate human tragedy!

– Virakesari Editorial

(September 26, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Waler Kellin, UN special representative, has stressed that a permanent solution should be found to the problems of the IDP. He has pointed that the displacement of civilians can be stopped when permanent peace is achieved.

1000’s of IDPs are living in temporary camps. It is difficult to fulfill the basic needs o the IDPs since many thousands have been displaced. These people are fully dependent on the relief.

Since the military efforts are continuing, it cannot be expected that the problems of the internally displaced people can be resolved. It is not fair to let them live in camps for a long time. There can economic problems. The people may experience psychological problems.

Steps should be taken to resettle internally displaced people and adequate compensation also should be paid to them. It is important to take proactive steps to bring permanent peace in this country.

If human tragedy should come to an end, permanent peace must be established in this country. We would like to stress that at least at this juncture, it must be realized that this is a humanitarian responsibility!
