(September 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lanka Navy ceremonially launched its 100th small boat constructed in its construction yards utilizing its manpower and indigenous expertise and raw material, in the morning today- the 11th September in which Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Pulic Security , Law and Order,Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, participated as the chief guest.
Secretary of Defence, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, participating as the chief guest who went on a tour around the Naval Headquarters, SLNS Rangalla-located within the Colombo Harbour premises, and SLNS Gemunu where the boats and Armoured Personnel Carriers construction yard is located, highly appreciated and commended the task shouldered by the Navy not only by safeguarding the territorial waters, thwarting transporting lethal weaponry by sea by the terrorists, combating sea tiger cadres out at sea, and defending ground areas in the northern and Eastern theatres of liberated area, but also by constructing armoured personnel carriers and boats lately.
The Secretary of Defence, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, visited the Naval Headquarter around 0930 hrs., where he was accorded with a guard of honour and warmly welcomed by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, after which he was ushered into the Commander of the Navy’s official suite’. Thereafter, he addressed the senior officers of the navy gathered at board room at the naval headquarters.
Then he visited the naval base SLNS Rangalla which provides security to the Colombo Harbour. Secretary of Defence, Mr Gotabhaya Rajapkshe, during his visit to SLNS Gemunu at Welisara, inspected armoured personnel carriers construction yard, Inshore Patrol Craft (IPCs) building yard and the Small Boats construction yard.
In the brief ceremony held at the base, Secretary of Defence, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, declared that 100th small boat constructed within a short span of time like two years is launched and distributed token commendation certificates among twenty naval personnel who contributed to this gigantic task, following the welcome speech by the Commander of the navy, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda.
In his speech, Mr.Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, while commending the responsibilities shouldered and the tasks performed by the Navy, as has been stated elsewhere, highly appreciated the launch of construction of our own small craft needed for the Navy saving a colossal amount of foreign exchange; and this endeavour would pave the way for constructing medium and large ships in the near future. - Sri Lanka Guardian
