"Even if President Mahindra Rajapaksa overlooks his slip which had certainly hurt many Sri Lankans not just the Tamils, Lt General Sarath Fonseka must lay his office down and punish himself at least for a period of time. He owes this not just to the Tamils, not just his soldiers but to the entire nation."

(October 01, Frankfurt, Sri Lanka Guardian) Hardly any country in the world is suffering so much on a majority-minority obsession as Sri Lanka. This obsession is killing a nation. Ironically the large majority of the people of Sri Lanka are not obsessed with it.
It is the politically strident class that is holding the country to ransom with its racist rabble-rousing. In the higher echelons of power racism has come to be the means by which just about everything is being judged and decided. Helpless people from the masses suffer extreme hardship and even lose their lives.
Amidst this state of affairs a man entrusted to liberate people under the yoke of terrorism, most of them Tamils has made a statement that was quite foolish to a foreign press especially in a country where the largest Sri Lankan Tamil community outside Sri Lanka live. They are there because racial violence sent them seeking refuge in their hundreds.
This man is the head of the armed forces and he has to take orders from the Head of State of the country and follow them without a murmur. This is what he expects of the men and women serving under him too.
If what he has stated gives the impression that the majority and minority have rights that are different and to one his nationhood gives total rights and to the other only whatever extended by the majority then this is something to be challenged and such an observation is all wrong and most unfortunate.
The tragic part is that this officer is an excellent soldier and done the country proud and the ideal person to rid the country of the terrorists. He is a good leader of his soldiers. However, in the best traditions demanded of the forces and the discipline that is paramount to them, he must show to the nation that he is an example to be emulated.
Even if President Mahindra Rajapaksa overlooks his slip which had certainly hurt many Sri Lankans not just the Tamils, Lt General Sarath Fonseka must lay his office down and punish himself at least for a period of time. No reasonable person will accept any excuse for Lt General Sarath Fonseka to stay in his command. This is forces discipline that demands the best. Here is an opportunity to the army general to show that he is truly worthy of wearing the uniform that offers safety and security to all the people who want peace and amity in the country.
It is hoped, he will be under censure – favourably self-censure – only for a short time. The country needs this man. - Sri Lanka Guardian
