Canadian Democratic League

(September 21, Toronto, Sri Lanka Guardian) The founding ideals of the Canadian Democratic League are based on respecting the fundamental rights of every citizen, help creating an environmentally friendly development ethos and striving towards achieving global peace.

Conscious of the need to be alert about our human rights concerns, we were the only organization among the Canadian Tamil Diaspora that challenged the illegal fund raising activities of the LTTE and their agents. This brought about a great deal of relief to our people from the threats and harassment of strident and unidentifiable fund collectors door to door.

In the forthcoming Federal Elections even though our members have been encouraged to use their franchise in line with their political ideologies, the Canadian Democratic League as an organization has decided to endorse the political agenda of the Liberal Party headed by the Honourable Stephane Dion.

Let’s Green our Homes

Among the many concerns we have that need to be highlighted during this period as the country prepares to elect a new government, we particularly stress the plight of families who have obtained houses on mortgage. Here we have a great opportunity to promote Green Consciousness by offering relief on tax deductions on mortgage payments to all sections of the community.

Such a facility could be used to enhance their properties in that direction and extend opportunities for all Canadians as units of families and neighbourhoods to develop environmentally friendly ideas and projects from their very home and community turf itself.
