Two ‘LTTE’ members held in Chennai

(August 06, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Two more Sri Lankan Tamils, a part of an LTTE procurement module, were arrested in Chennai on the charge of trying to smuggle explosive materials to the banned LTTE last night.

The two identified as Uma Ramanan (23) and Amalan (27) were ‘secured on suspicion’ from the Tirumangalam area of the city on a tip-off, the Q Branch Police, which deals with extremist organisations, said.

Police recovered a few spark plugs and some quantity of potassium nitrate, used in explosives, from the two, who were staying in a rented house at Tirumangalam.

During interrogation, the two failed to disclose the reason for their stay in city and were tight-lipped about the consignee of the materials. Police suspect that materials were meant for smuggling to the banned LTTE.

The police immediately seized the materials and arrested the two under Unlawful Activities Act (Prevention) 1967 and lodged them in Puzhal Central prison.

It may be noted that the ‘Q’ branch police arrested a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee on the charges of smuggling electronic and communication gadgets LTTE.

The ‘Q’ branch police on a tip-off detained one Selva Kumar (31) near Keelkatalai bus stand. It is said that he attempted to smuggle electronic gadgets from an electronic shop in suburban Madipakkam under the direction from Jeevan alias Iniyayan to the LTTE intelligence wing at Killinochi in Sri Lanka. Jeeva had sent an SMS to Selvakumar recently briefing these details.

When the police checked his baggage they found an equipment used to operate a motor through mobile.

Police sources said that this kind of equipment was mostly used in bombs.

The police later recovered two power stations nano starter (used in computer networking) and nine internet phone adaptorsa among other accessories from his room.

Selva visited India twice earlier and he worked for an NGO Eelam Refugees Rehabilitation. He left for Sri Lanka in 2003 and returned back to India in 2007.
