(August 17, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) For many the Hikkaduwa beach festival will be a weekend that is not to be forgotten. Reasons vary, but some of the few highlights caught on camera are shown in the pictures we carry here. It only seems faire to say that Hikkaduwa might have had its fair share of hiccups. What was supposed to be a culture oriented, family weekend get away turned into a show of women half naked, dirty dancing in the night away and a youth festival that spun out of control.

A glamour poster of the Hikkaduwa beach festival boasted of games for children and fun filled activities that were lined up for the family. It’s only fair to say that the beach festival was haphazardly organised, many of the events were more suited for adults than children.

The festival kicked off with a parade of the cultural troupe backed by marching bands from different schools in the so called happening city of Hikkaduwa. Its unclear if the organisers sought permission from the Education Ministry to have school children parade the street at that time. Then came the official launch of the event, where all types of the dancers took to the stage for a selected crowd to view. A section of local bands were also given the stage for a short period of time to show off their talents. It was however only after this that the real party began.

What ought to be appreciated however remains the progressive attitude of the organisers
In having brought down cabaret dancers from UK and elsewhere only clad in bikinis while others were half naked,……..dirty dancing for the entire audience to see. What a crowd puller!

Let’s not forget to mention DJ’s, all of whom were foreign and brought down specifically for the beach festival. While we boast of wanting to boost local talent in the Country, we go half way round the glob to bring down foreign DJs and spend fortunes more on them . Let’s hope that at least the next time around our local DJs could have a small share of the spotlight.

While tamasha went on for the next few days, the festival saw tremendous influx of party goers and clubbers only because none of the clubbing hot spot in Colombo were open. One particular infamous ‘spot’ noted that they were asked to temporarily close just so that the crowds could move down south in search of entertainment. Supposedly it worked, and only due to that did the Hikkaduwa beacj festival see such numbers.

An announcement was made that the festival was going to be as annual “orgy”, it’s however unclear what Hikkaduwa 2009 would turn out to be.

While explicit videos and pictures circulate on the internet of raves that went on throughout the festival, these pictures here merely show the tip of that iceberg. It has to be seen to be belived!
