Musharraf's party says he should quit

(August 10, Islamabad, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) has called on President Pervez Musharraf to quit before the impeachment proceedings begin on Monday.

"Musharraf should step down before the start of the impeachment proceedings, because the country cannot afford confrontation any more," Sardar Bahadur Khan, a lawmaker from Musharraf's main ally, told the Media on Sunday.

Khan said coalition leader "(Asif Ali) Zardari has offered a safe exit to Musharraf", adding that "The president should avail the opportunity to make an honorable exit".

Zardari and former premier Nawaz Sharif announced Thursday that they would seek Musharraf's impeachment for what they called mismanaging the country.

The government has summoned the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, to meet Monday evening to initiate the impeachment process.

Khan said more than 25 lawmakers from the PML-Q wanted Musharraf to step down.

While the coalition parties are preparing a list of charges against Musharraf, the president continued to consult legal experts Saturday while constitutional experts have also advised him to approach the Supreme Court for relief.
