India and Pakistan to put Kabul attack behind them

(August 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India met with his Pakistani counterpart Syed Yosuf Raza Gilani in Colombo yesterday (August 2) and the two leaders of South Asia's nuclear powers discussed the issue of attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul, where Pakistani involvement has been speculated, and agreed to continue efforts to normalize relations between the two nations that have fought three wars since Independence.

India's Foreign Secretary, Shiv Shankar Menon, revealed that Dr. Singh had stated that for the past 4 years every effort had been made to develop strong relations with Pakistan but that the attack had cast a shadow on the process.

Prime Minister Gilani had said that Pakistan would call for and welcome an independent and impartial investigation into the attack. Both leaders had then pledges to put the incident behind them and expend all efforts to develop better bilateral relations.

This is the first bilateral talks held between Dr. Singh and the recently elected Mr. Gilani and had been billed as the most important bilateral discussion on the sidelines of the 15th SAARC Summit.
