(August 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been called in to investigate a widely circulated email report about an allegation of the rape of a Colombo University student by a Marshal which led to student violence at campus today.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo Prof. S . Hirimburegama said that the investigation on report about the rape accusation has been handed over to the CID.
“We have asked the CID to investigate into the accusation of the rumour that a university marshal raped a girl in the university which has been given a lot of publicity through email and a radio organisation. The CID is now investigating the sources of the email and about the reported incident”, she said.
Prof. Hirimburegama urged the public to submit any information or proof on the said incident to the CID in order to find the truth.
Commenting about the unrest that erupted in the university today she said that the students got violent over the issue without waiting to discuss the matter with her even after a meeting has been scheduled on this regard. “The students and the university administration has had a discussion afterwards and they have apologised for their behaviour” she said.
Damage was caused to property at the Marshals office by students and the police was called into stop the mob attacks.
Meanwhile Cinnamon Gardens Police said there was no complaint about a case of a rape.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said that they have not been able to ascertain whether the allegations about the case of rape was correct and they were carrying out further investigations.
