We Have No Faith On Unilateral Ceasefire Declaration By The Tiger – EPDP

(July 26, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare, stated that he had no faith on the unilateral ceasefire declared by the Tigers as they would conveniently use this period to strengthen themselves militarily in the manner they had done in previous occasions and that everyone was well aware of their tactics.

The Minister said so on the last 22nd evening at a discussion he had with the Parliamentary Member Group of European Union.

Expressing his views further, the Minister said that an honourable and lasting solution to the political rights of the Tamil Speaking People could be achieved through devolution of power and that the first stage of his party’s three stage political proposal that would prove to be successful was now in progress and that it was a step in the right direction.

Accordingly, a Provincial Council had now been established in the Eastern Province through an election, though many shortcomings had been reported, this election should be viewed as a beginning made towards realizing the political rights of the Tamil Speaking People, pointed out the Hon. Minister. He further said that the Tigers could not exist in a democratic framework and what the Tiger leadership yearned for was a land from which he could carry forward his terror activities.

European Union (EU) South Asian Director Robert Evans, EU representative Claudia Schwendenwein, London Green Party representative Jean Lambert, EU parliamentarians Jaromir Kohilcek, E. Joe Lenin, Edith Bauer, participated at the discussion.
