The politics of war!

“Being faced with a major challenge of a strike, the government has made an allegation that the call for the strike is with an ulterior motive of belittling the military victories of the government. The government is hopeful that the South will believe it.”

(July 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Due to bankruptcy, the government has to depend on war to retain power - to remain in power. It is clear that war is the excuse for all social ailments. War is necessary to do politics in the country. Today, every issue in the country is associated with war. The government cites the war as the excuse for all issues ranging from cost of living to the appointment of a Constitutional Council.

The Buddhist Sinhala extremists need the war to do their politics in the country. Those who are committed to the repression of the minorities in the country are hailed as leaders in the South.

Whereas, the Sinhala leaders, who stand for justice and fair play, who propose the view that there should be equality among both the Sinhalese and Tamils, who plead that the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil people must be met, are belittle and denounced as villains or traitors in the South. That is the sorry plight of the country.

The leadership of the government opts to pursue military solution to do its politics knowing very well the tide of politics in the South.

The economy has worsened and the cost of living has gone up hitting the people very badly and the people are compelled to go to streets for picketing and demonstrating against their sufferings due to the economic crisis.

The trade unions have called for a general strike on July 10th to protest against the increasing cost of living and demanding a salary increase. Since members of more than 100 trade unions are expected to participate in the proposed general strike, it appears to be a serious challenge to the government.

Being faced with a major challenge of a strike, the government has made an allegation that the call for the strike is with an ulterior motive of belittling the military victories of the government. The government is hopeful that the South will believe it.
The government has made an appeal to the working class not to extend their support to the general strike, if they really want a victory in the war. Will the South be convinced of this yarn?
