"If the Tamil voters in the Wanni were allowed to exercise their franchise the results of the presidential election would have been different. This sudden neutral attitude of the Wanni Tamil voter needs an acceptable explanation."

(July 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Basing my views on recent happenings in the Eastern Province and the overwhelming support given by your government and also by our security forces I see an immediate solution to the ‘two-decade war.’
That is by the President appointing Pirapaharan, the LTTE leader as acting chief minister of the Northern Province, gifting him with a million dollar luxury bullet proof car, and like Pillayan allowed to retain his military cadres and camps with the proviso that Northern Provincial Council elections will be held within three months from the date of his appointment.
Today, Karuna, one time military commander of the LTTE who is alleged to have committed numerous crimes against humanity including the massacre of 600 Sinhalese police officers in cold blood and the murder of Buddhist monks at Arantalawa, and his deputy Pillayan, have been forgiven by the Rajapakse government.
Karuna travelled to the UK courtesy of the government and returned to the island recently and he is provided with considerable security. He is keen to become a member of parliament we hear and I have no doubt that he will realise this wish soon.
His Deputy, Pillayan has been appointed by the President as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, is allowed to retain his military cadres and camps, and news reports state he has received a bulletproof luxury vehicle.
Both Karuna and Pillayan were leaders of the monolithic terror organisation the LTTE.
Why cannot the Mahinda Rajapakse government react the same way towards Pirapaharan? Newspapers carried statements by the late MP, Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi that there was an alleged "deal" struck with the LTTE Leader prior to the last presidential election and in consequence, the Tamil voters in the Wanni were ‘ordered’ by the LTTE Leader not to cast their votes — for the first time in an islandwide election in this country.
If the Tamil voters in the Wanni were allowed to exercise their franchise the results of the presidential election would have been different. This sudden neutral attitude of the Wanni Tamil voter needs an acceptable explanation.
The appointment of Pillayan as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province by the President is also seen as acceptance of the claim that the Eastern Province is also a part of the ‘Historical Tamil Homeland!’ No one disputes that the Northern Province is the historical homeland of the Tamils and so, instead of continuing a costly war resulting in the loss of young lives — both Sinhalese and Tamil — and also resulting in irreparable damage to the economy forcing poverty on a large section of our people, I am hereby requesting the President to appoint Pirapaharan as acting chief minister of the Northern Province with the same security safeguards as have been provided to Karuna and Pillayan.
I am confident that this appointment will be acceptable to Pirapaharan. Then this two-decade war will come to an end.
I often hear people stating that it does not matter how much the present generation suffers as long as LTTE terrorism is crushed. From what the present army commander says it will be sometime towards the end of 2009 that the LTTE could be "blunted’ and even after that it will continue as an insurgency. These people forget that their ‘present generation’ in fact includes within it four generations.
1. The elders, whose children are in their late 40s or early 50s who form the second generation.
2. Their children who would be in late 20s or early 30s who form the third generation.
3. In time of war this generation would be the most vulnerable and their children who range from infants to school going children who form the fourth generation.
So by pursuing this war the economic hardships, the misery and pain due to loss of young lives affect as many as four generations. By not making a sincere effort to find an acceptable solution to the "minorities’ problem" we are sacrificing the well being of as many as four generations at present in this country.
So, Mr. President, why not show the same compassion and sincerity you have showered on Karuna and Pillayan also on Pirapaharan, and as an appeasement offer him the ‘smaller crown’ of Acting Chief Minister of the Northern Province, a bullet proof luxury car and with the same proviso that he could retain his military cadres and camps which will go a long way to clinch such a deal. Afterall Pirapaharan is entitled to say he needs the arms to protect himself from Karuna’s private army.
Considering the misery, the pain, the loss of human lives, property and the irreparable damage to the economy this suggestion provides an immediate solution. So why not act?
Names such as Karuna, Pillayan and Pirapaharan do not matter very much for these are two sides of the same coin.

To the auther of this article.
While some of your points are true and correct some I cannot accept.
It is too much early to comment on pillyan and Karuna party. We have a long way to go.
Commenting on the job what the present gov. has done. It was a huge success so far. At least we see some results.
The root cause of this "WOUND" is the SUNGOAT. It is clear that we have to wipe out this bacteria. It is far more a very good cause for the tamil nation as well as sinhala nation.
As I stated before see how the gov. reacted so far and see how it will do with the SUNGOAT and others you have mentioned. Before writing such "EASY going article" there are many factors needs to be considered.
Do you think "IS IT EASY TO DEFEAT A RUTHLESS TERRORIST ORGANISATION" such as LTTE. Which has already been pampered by previous governments. By the help of them (prev. govs.) it bacame ruthless as such.
We must all, really help the gov. on this good cause to defeat the terrorism.
To summarize my article. SUNGOAT should be defeated/Killed/destroyed. Then talk about peace or anything.
Any Writers on this regard please don't discourage the gov. or our forces doing such an invaluable job.
Note: I am not a mem. of Mahinda chinthanaya nor a member of any other political party. (But I appreciate what he does for the moment). I know we need politicians. But I hate them becasue they are the people who made our beloved country to become the best in the 3rd world misery.
