July10 strike: only the beginning of workers’ struggle- UNP

(July 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing the Media at the UNP Media unit today (6 Jul) , UNP M.P. Joseph Michael Perera said all Unions affiliated to the UNP will participate at the 10th July strike .He also emphasized that if their demands including a monthly wage hike of Rs.7500.00 to all workers is not reasonably settled , they would continue their struggle forward even more vigorously .

The Govt. cannot refuse to grant these justifiable demands, because, if it takes measures to stop the billions wasted on its corruption, uncontrolled profligacy, on Jumbo foreign tours, multimillion losses on projects like Mihin Air and a bloated Govt. expenditure on its Cabinet of 108 Ministers and over 100 Presidential advisors, the money saved thereby would be enough to grant the demands.

According to the latest statistics , this is the first time in Sri Lanka , under the Rajapakse Govt. that children’ s malnourishment rate has risen to over 30 % !. This includes children of all categories including the workers. The obvious inference is that the workers cannot afford to feed the children with their earnings. This malnourishment is a serious problem because it ripples through every aspect of a child and parent’s life including their education, health and mental frame, he added.

While urging all to support the strike, he asserted that a large number who are not members are also rallying round the UNP in solidarity with the strikers.
