Unfavorable impression of Sri Lanka abroad created due to extra legal activities of the state - Mano Ganesan

(June 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) My only aim is to forewarn the innocent civilians travelling from the north to keep away from trouble when the government and the LTTE have taken their fights to the civilians of both south and Wanni. The killings and abductions in Colombo are outcome of this reality. I welcome the response from Presidential secretariat if it means that there will not be anymore white van abductions in Colombo. I also request the presidential secretariat as the seat of the legitimate government to inform us the fate of the persons gone missing in Colombo. Civil Monitoring Commission has already handed over the list of abductees to prime minister and we will be pleased to forward it to the presidential secretariat on request, said Civil Monitoring Commission Convener Mano Ganesan MP in response to the statement from the presidential secretariat.

Ganesan said further, It is the government which chose to send busloads of Tamils from Colombo to north and east. It prevented Tamil from coming to Colombo. This was the government policy. It had been barred due to the interventions of the judiciary. We do not have any controls over the irrational and extra legal activities of both Government and the LTTE. But when civilians are caught in-between as a result it is we who are forced to cope up with the crisis.

Laughable it is that presidential secretariat's response to me is based on the so called Help Desk of the Human Rights ministry. It is not my problem if this Help Desk is not getting complaints of abductions. It indicates the confidence of the people on state apparatus. This so called Help Desk is nothing but another in the list of ploys. These serve the government not the victimized people. There is another committee on the subject of "Disappearances" headed by cabinet minister Rajitha Senaratne. This too was formed with lot of fanfare like the 'Help Desk'. This committee did not sit for months. This was revealed to me non other than presidential advisor Vasudeva Nanayakara, a member of this committee.

When civil attired service personnel go in unauthorized white vans for picking people, it amounts to enforced disappearance. This is happening now in Colombo. Tamil politicians performing in this very government as ministers have at last accepted our position in public.

We are calling the state to arrest people accordance with the law. Since last night there had been reports of two abductions in Balagala Road, Wattala, outskirts of Colombo and St. John's Street, Mattakkuliya, Colombo 15. These have occurred after this statement from the presidential secretariat appeared yesterday. It is good if the presidential secretariat is concerned about the unfavorable impression of Sri Lanka abroad. But it is not due to our activities but by the extra legal activities of the state.

As the lawmaker in the parliament and a sworn human rights activist I have all legitimacy and right over any security apparatus to forewarn the people of this country. People have elected me to be the voice of the voiceless. I need no authorization from any entity on this.

Those who find fault in me should first stop all extra legal activities of the state forces.

Most Tamils here in my district Colombo have nothing to do with the war in the North-East or bombings in the South. Mr. Wimal Weerawansa M.P, a strong government ally states if any more bombs go off, it will be difficult to control the patience of the Sinhala people. This highly inflammatory call calculated to instigate thugs to be prepared to attack Tamils. Weerawansa is creating ill-feelings against Tamils and India. His positions against India have reflected on the Indian Tamils in the past.

Those who find fault in me should first stop all such inflammatory comments made by government allies.
