This country is not President’s dowry property -Dayasiri

(June 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Dayasiri Jayasekera, UNP M.P., addressing the Media today (12Jun), at the UNP media, said, that it is country’s resources and people’s funds this Govt. is dissipating on this mutually destructive war, giving false deadlines to finish it, but eternally postponing the deadline.

This country is not President’s dowry property or the private fiefdom of himself and his brothers. The people should therefore be made aware as to the true war situation, instead of suppressing the media and resorting to tyranny against those who expose the military failures and war debacles.

The Govt. is so bent on hiding its misdeeds and corrupt activities , that it is conducting a vicious campaign against the free media , so much so that , Sri Lanka is now classified as the third most dangerous country in the World for journalists !- just within just last one year , 12 Journalists were killed, countless assaulted and intimidated. There had also been instances where the Govt. politicos themselves have been directly involved in storming Media Institutions, damaging property and assaulting Journalists. No appropriate punitive action against them had been taken by the Govt. so far.

In the circumstances, UNP Leader raised this urgent issue in Parliament, when the Prime Minister, Wickremenayake, who is a people’s’ representative promised to look into this

In the meanwhile, the Defence Ministry web has held out dire warnings, (even worse than censorships!) against the Free Media with draconian prohibitions as follows:

1. No unethical collection of information – this is a fundamental right of a Journalist. What is ethical and unethical cant be decided by a politician, much less by the Defence Secretary who is just another Govt. servant.

2. No criticisms to be leveled against military operations, irrespective of Govt. fiascos.

3. No criticisms over promotion schemes –this is to politicize and pave the way for corrupt, arbitrary and capricious appointments in total disregard to efficiency and competence. It is noteworthy, since of late; the Courts have reversed several such arbitrary appointments.

4. No criticisms on military procurements – this is to open the Gateway for corrupt transactions. Already there is an inquiry on the MIG 27 purchases made earlier before the Parl. Select Committee which the Govt. is postponing on various false pretexts.
This move is also to conceal the ‘dead loss’ war procurements of the Govt. of vessels , planes and bullet proof helmets which have been finally discarded as unfit and outdated for use. And, to hide many more such transactions in the pipeline.
