Talking About Nothing

(June 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Gayantha Karunatileke, UNP M.P. addressing the Media today (24 Jun) in Colombo referred to the vociferous but empty threat made by the Petroleum Minister Fowzie to the LIOC (Indian oil Co) making headline news that he will take over the oil Companies if they do not raise the fuel prices in line with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC.). The Minister also stated he has written to the LIOC to this effect.

Karunatileke compared this big din to a mouse trying to roar like a lion .The original agreement signed by the UNP Govt. with the LIOC in 2003 clearly provided for the CPC to control and determine the fuel prices. This Govt. however revoked this provision in 2006 allowing the LIOC to freely determine its own prices. Now, the Govt. which is steeply raising prices to extort from the people is realizing that when the LIOC sells at less price as it is doing now, the CPC‘s sales are dropping, and it cannot increase prices any more. It is just to camouflage this truth and to cheat the people for which this Govt. has earned a special reputation, the Minister has made this ‘noise’, he said.

The LIOC also endorsed this position as it has rejected the Minister’s utterances, explaining that there were no such threats in his letter. Indeed, the Govt., it said, has given them the right to determine their own prices.

Further, the Govt. is trying to solve all its dire financial problems via the CPC (the Corporation which is most conducive for its extortion and deception policies!) falsely blaming the World prices. It is also giving signals to the LIOC to import kerosene oil knowing well that such import price will be higher than the present CPC price, which will enable the Govt. to seize that opportunity to raise the kerosene price too, pointing at the higher price of the LIOC.

The problem with this Govt. is that it is trying to recover all losses incurred by the largest Cabinet in the World, the MihinAir multimillion blunders, the CEB muddle up, the Defence expenditure bungles and its profligate travel expenses via the CPC and ruthless extortion against the people, he regretted.

The Govt. is only gearing itself to be a Master of manipulation and deception cheating the masses, rather than finding realistic solutions to the country’s burning problems, Karunatileke exhorted. It is also noteworthy that this Govt. has not given any relief to the people in fuel prices since 2006!

There is scarcely a single sphere where this Govt. has shown development, let alone providing relief, he exhorted. The Tea industry, the Farmers and agriculture sector too are brought to the brink of total disaster. The subsidies to the small time Tea growers and the Farmers are also affected adversely, apart from the higher prices they have to pay for the manure. Besides, the Govt. has indicated that it will have to impose more burdens on them. This is why it is holding elections in those areas, Sabaragamuwa and North Central province ahead of time and plunders the votes of the Tea growers and farmers who are the majority in those regions, before it devastates them with hardships.
