(June 29, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ending their nearly month-long ordeal, eighteen fishermen from Pamban in Tamil Nadu, arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for straying to their waters, were released and handed over to Indian coast guard officials at the international maritime boundary line (IMBL).
The fishermen, arrested on May 26 for fishing in the exclusive economic zone of Sri Lanka, were set free by a magistrate court in Mannar town, officials in Rameswaram said.
Three country boats belonging to them were also returned. However, five other fishermen, who were also arrested along with those released today, were detained as they face serious charges including smuggling of drugs.
