Sri Lanka targets over 8 billion USD through Exports


(June 27, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Ministry of Export Development and International Trade is targeting USD 8.6 billion of exports this year and are confident in achieving the target. The country recorded USD 7.74 billion last year.

Sri Lanka has recorded a 10.2% growth in the export sector during the first three months of this year.

During the year 2007, western countries, which account for more than 50% of Sri Lanka’s exports, still comprise the largest market. Sri Lanka’s largest export market is the US which accounts nearly 26% of total exports.

Sri Lanka is highly an international trade oriented nation with bilateral trade consisting approximately 60% of the GDP of the country. This figure is comparatively quite high compared to other developing countries.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism reported that the tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka have increased by 18.4 % during the month of May in comparison with the same period of last year.

According to the Tourism Ministry sources, the arrivals have increased from 26,307 in May 2007 to 31,140 in the same month in 2008. Sri Lanka Tourism has already launched many campaigns in attracting more foreign tourists from Middle East, India, Russia, Europe, and China in particular.

Tourism sector is one of the largest employers in the country and the Government focuses increasing priority to develop the tourism sector as well as attract high end tourists to the country. Also, tourism sector is among the five highest foreign exchange earners for the country.
