Second attack reported against JVP

JVP MP K.D. Lal Kantha who participated in today's protest said that a group that was in a double cab vehicle parked in a byroad threw burnt engine oil at the dispersing agitators. They were leaving the place after the protest and the meeting held to urge to guarantee democracy, freedom of speech and the right to protest.

Stating that governments that attempted to suppress democracy were sent home by people in previous occasions, MP Lal Kantha appealed from people to unite to oust the fascist Rajapakse regime.

Five JVP cadres including a provincial councilor are being treated in hospital for the injuries sustained in yesterday's assault.

JVP MP Anura Kumara Disanayaka says that yesterday's attack was personally conducted by one Sanath Nishantha, a brother in law of Minister Dayasritha Thisera and the Chairman of Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha.

Meanwhile, a leaflet distribution campaign against the raising of train fares will be held by the JVP opposite Colombo Fort Railway Station at 4.00 p.m. today (9th).

Railway fares were increased by more than 100% and the JVP has demanded that rail fares be brought down immediately.
