Refuge? No, refuse!

(June 26, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamilnadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi, while chairing the Conference of the District Collectors and Police Officials, has directed them to prevent the Sri Lankan refugees from buying assets in the State by obtaining fake documents.

He has rightly instructed the police officials not to allow those who attempt to disturb the security and sovereignty of the country.

The Sri Lankan Tamils, who land here as refugees, have a severe identification problem, which cause immense trouble and inconvenience to the State government machinery.

Most of them land here clandestinely with the help of fishermen and without proper documents.

When they claim that they had to flee the war-stricken Island nation, as they were caught in the conflict between the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and the LTTE, the State government officials, driven by compassion, are left with no other alternative but to admit them in the refugee camps.

The security agencies like ‘Q’ Branch and Coast Guard cannot identify how many of the refugees are genuine war victims and how many belong to the LTTE.

This has been a perennial problem faced by the State police and other agencies.

The CM has said that as of 31 May, 73,000 Lankan Tamil refugees have been given shelter in 117 camps spread through out the State.

Rameshwaram alone has recorded the entry of more than 21,000 refugees since 2006.

The concern expressed by the police and Coast Guard with regards to the identification of these refugees has to be taken by the government seriously.

A close analysis of the Sri Lankan Tamil Militants’ activities in the State, particularly in the last two years (with the advent of the DMK government) would expose the fact that the increase in the inflow of refugees is directly proportional to the increase in militant activities.

Hundreds of Lankan Tamil militants have been captured along with arms, ammunition, weapons, IEDs, hawala money, four wheelers, high-speed fibre-glass boats and other materials.

The Central intelligence officials have confirmed the unholy nexus and communication network between the LTTE, Maoists and Jihadis.

Despite the action taken by the ‘Q’ branch and Coast Guard, the LTTE activities have been going on unabatedly, as evidenced by the recent capture of ‘uniform materials’ being smuggled for the LTTE cadres.

In this kind of a scenario, the unstinted support extended by a few political parties such as the VCK, the PMK, the MDMK and the DK is a cause of great concern.

Recently the VCK President Thirumavalavan openly flaunted his support for the outfit and dared the government to take action on him and even yesterday in the MDMK’s state conference, its President Vaiko was vociferous in his support for the LTTE.

The ruling DMK, which also has a soft corner towards the LTTE, turns a blind eye to all this, which proves to be an impediment in the security agencies’ action plan against the Sri Lankan Tamil militants.

The ancient text of Kautilya’s ‘Artha Shastra’, which holds very good for a country’s governance even in today’s circumstances, says that ‘Refugees have to be compulsorily sheltered at the borders only and they should never be allowed inside the territory’.

Whereas, TN government’s compassion has crossed the limits and the setting up of hundreds of camps for the refugees through out the State without proper machinery, manpower and infrastructure to keep them under check, has become a severe headache not only for the state, but for the entire nation itself.

While the predicament of the Tamil Nadu government is understandable, the volunteer set up of ‘refuge’ for the illegal immigrants of Bangladeshi Muslims by the Communist West Bengal and Congress Assam governments welcoming them wholeheartedly and providing them with shelter, food, Voter-ID cards, ration cards and all sorts of facilities is beyond understanding and reasoning and calls for strong and severe condemnation.

On the other hand, in a cruel irony, Kashmiri Pundits, who have been persecuted and driven out by the Pakistani militants, are living like refugees in their own land! Neither the state government nor the central government has taken care of their welfare.

The nation has become a ‘refuge’ for illegal immigrants and the nation’s citizens are living like ‘refugees’.

The indications from West Bengal, Assam, Tamilnadu and Kashmir do not augur well for the security and sovereignty of the country. (NT)
