Ranil calls for interim constitution until the new one is drafted

(June 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Leader of Opposition , Ranil Wickremesinghe ,at the ceremony to commemorate the 97th birth anniversary of Late Dudley Senanayake , the former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, reiterated that a political solution to the national ethnic issue should be incorporated in the constitution ,and the President must be one who should be responsible to Parliament , the supreme representative body of the people. But, now, the Parliament is reduced to a joke, he regretted.

Ranil called for an interim constitution enshrining these provisions until a new constitution is drafted.

While emphasizing the need for a small Cabinet of Ministers based on traditional Sri Lankan values, he said, Late Dudley Senanayake insisted that political and economic freedom must be the right of every citizen.

The vote base of the UNP rose during Dudley’s time, and now it is strongest, he asserted.

Speaker Lokubandara, speaking on the occasion said, Dudley‘s life was based on true Buddhist principles. This is what propelled him to high positions, and resign when moral considerations impelled him to do so. This quality is an example the present Leaders must follow, he exhorted.
