(June 25, Dambulla, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Socialist Farmers Union of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna staged a protest in Dambulla town yesterday (June 24th) to urge the government to address the grievances of the farmer community. (More Images Inside)

Party strongmen K.D. Lal Kantha, S.K. Subasinghe, Ranaweera Pathirana and Jayantha Wijesekara led the agitation, which began with a march from the Gam Udawa premises to the Clock Tower in the heart of the city, where an hour-long protest took place.

Demonstrators demanded the government not to curtail the fertilizer subsidy, and called for the reduction of the cost of living and to address other problems of farmers.

Later, a rally was held near the Dambulla Special Economic Zone.

Speaking here, Mr. Lal Kantha said, "Instead of increasing salaries of the working people, this government, with its inefficiency and corruption, has burdened them with an unbearable cost of living. It is making farmers helpless by curtailing the fertilizer subsidy, while maintaining a huge cabinet. Those ministers have become useless peons today."

Failure to address farmers' grievances would bring all progressive forces together for the ousting of the present regime, he warned.
