“In 60 years, Israeli's image as a peaceful victim of Arab and Islamic aggression has evaporated clear to the world, It is in this background that the Israel ambassador to Sri – Lanka Mark Sofer based in New Delhi came to Sri Lanka to white – wash the black image of the zionist – entity, trying to hopelessly claim that Israel is accommodating, moderate and a peaceful democratic nation.”

(June 10, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Israel ambassador designated to Sri – Lanka who is resident in New Delhi, delivered a lecture titled "Political developments in West Asia " in Colombo on the 4th of June 2008. Ambassador Mark Sofer took great pains in his sauve diplomatic manner to emphasize that Israel was accommodating, moderate and reasonable and longed for peace in the intractable war which has caused immense suffering to Israelis and Palestinians. He also pointedly remarked that the majority of Arabs too longed for peace in the Middle – East. He vehemently accused the Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad as extremist and spoilers to the peace effort. He also made a reference to President Ahmadinejad who with his comments like "Israel must be wiped out of the world map", "Israel is a rotting corpse" and "Israel is sinking" as very provocative and unhelpful towards the road map to peace.
Mr. Mark Sofer was on a mission to wipe and white – wash the satanic image of the cruel Zionist regime, which the world knows as the most tyrannical regime, that has ever existed. He acknowledged and confessed that it is in the interest of Israel to have a Palestinian state and that pragmatic people both in Palestine and Israel desired an independent Palestinian state. Repeatedly he demanded that the historical narrative regarding the dispute be forgotten and that both parties look for only the future. This of course is an impossible demand as it is known that the conflict is on account of historical faults and mistakes that the western powers and the then Soviet Union made in creating Israel. It is also known that Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad come what may until doom's day will steadfastly continue their resistance with the goal of dismantling the Jewish state. Although their ambition is far-fetched events that have happened since 2006 January when Hamas was elected to power have made them hopeful of realizing their dream.
Why has Israel who wanted to create "greater Israel" – border from the Nile to the Euphrates i.e , from Egypt to Iraq now builds a wall around itself and is inclining to peace. What happened to the slogan from the "Nile to the Euphrates? The truth is that Israel has an image problem and that under the fierce resistance of the Hamas, Hezbollah, and Islamic Jihad the Zionist military machine is wilting. The myth of their military supremacy was shattered by Hezbollah in the July 2006 war in Lebanon. More than the military defeat the most serious problem that the Zionist regime is facing today is the image problem.
The lies, propaganda, fabrication and misrepresentation by the Western world and the zionists have been exposed. In 60 years since the creation of Israel, the world has slowly come to recognize the beast for what it is and for what it always has been. The veneer is finally coming off as the myth surrounding Israel slowly fades away.
Israel for 60 years has presented itself as an island of freedom, democracy and human rights in an ocean of repressive Arab and Islamic dictatorial regimes. This image has been tainted, however, by comments from numerous world leaders, NGO s, veteran anti apartheid activists and Israeli academics and writers, which has exposed the real racist and oppressive nature of the Zionist regime. In 2002 Anglican Archbishop and Noble prize winner Desmond Tutu wrote a series of articles in major newspapers, comparing the Israeli occupation of the West Bank to apartheid South Africa, and calling for the international community to withdraw support from Israel until the territories are no longer occupied. In one such article in the Guardian, Tutu compared Israeli might and power with that of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Pinochet, Milosevic and Idi Amin.
Other prominent South African anti – apartheid activists who have made similar analogies, and in fact stated that Israeli policies towards the Palestinians exceed apartheid in their oppressiveness include Farid Esack, Ronnie Kasrils, Winnie Mandela, Dennis Goldberg, and Arun Ghandi. The writing was on the wall as long as 1961, when Hendrik, Verwoerd, then Prime – minister of South Africa's apartheid and the architect of South Africa 's apartheid policies said that "The Jews took Israel from the Arabs after the Arabs had lived there for a thousand years. Israel like South Africa, is an apartheid state" .
Other world leaders who have drawn this comparison include Jimmy Carter, Zbigniew Brezezinki and John Dugard. a South African who is professor of international law and Judge on the International Court of Justice. In 2007 in his capacity as a special rapporteur on the situation of human – rights in the Palestinian territories, Dugard described the situation in the West Bank as "an apartheid regime.. worse than the one that existed in South Africa," His proposed follower to the International Court of Justice Richard Falk, went a step further in this year, comparing the crimes of Israel to those of the Nazis.
As the people of the world have woken up slowly from their slumber and begun to observe the utter immorality of supporting Israel against the Palestinians, they too have taken whatever action they can. Calls for a boycott of Israel are now more popular then ever, where as proposals for such action 20 years ago would have been stifled by obscure allegations of anti – Semitism. Today demands for boycott and divestment from Israel come from all four corners of the world, with NGO's. trade unions and churches all voting to boycott Israel in various ways, including tourism academia, sport, and culture.
Moreover it is gradually come about that Israeli war criminals can no longer simply come and go around the world as they please without hindrance or accountability for their actions. Although we have not reached the stage at which Israeli soldiers are being brought before war crimes tribunals, such as those established for the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda, we are on that road. In November 2002 Lt. General Shaul Mofaz, then Israel defence minister, was forced to cut - short a speaking tour in Britain, when the Director of Public Prosecutions asked the British police to investigate war crimes allegations against him.
In September 2005 Major General Dorong Almog was unable to disembark from an El – Al flight at Heathrow Airport, he was tipped off about his impending arrest while in the air, and stayed on the plane for 2 hours to avoid capture, until it flew back to Israel. Scotland Yard detectives were armed with a warrant naming Almog as a war crimes suspect for ordering the demolition of 59 civilian Palestinian homes. Despite the fact that British detectives refused to board the plane for fear that attempts to arrest him could lead to a fire fight, the issue of an arrest warrant itself was a landmark in the struggle for justice for the Palestinians. Subsequently. then Israel chief – of – staff Dan Halutz and his predecessor Moshe Ya'alon did have a warrant for his arrest issued by a district court on a trip to New Zealand. He was ultimately spared by the Attorney - General, but the message is becoming clear :Israel war criminals will be hunted – down around the world.
In February 2006 IDF Gaza division commander Brigadier – General Aviv Kochavi cancelled leave to study in England for fear that he would be arrested and tried for war crimes. Kochavi has played a key role during Operation Defence Shield in 2002, in which hundreds of Palestinian were massacred during an Israel offensive. At this point to send him to London, or any other officer who fought in the territories, was a danger.
In 60 years, Israeli's image as a peaceful victim of Arab and Islamic aggression has evaporated clear to the world, It is in this background that the Israel ambassador to Sri – Lanka Mark Sofer based in New Delhi came to Sri Lanka to white – wash the black image of the zionist – entity, trying to hopelessly claim that Israel is accommodating, moderate and a peaceful democratic nation
Mr. Mark Sofer was the guest of the Bandaranayke Center for International Studies
( BCIS) where his lecture was delivered .It would be in the best interest of the BCIS to now invite a local or foreign speaker to elucidate the stand of the resitance in West Asia. If the BCIS does not do this it would be accused or being partisan in favorer of the Zionist – regime and lose its credibility as a center for teaching international relations.
