Uphold Democracy & Co- Existence In The Eastern Provincial Council Election

“Although the TULF (Tamil United Liberation Front) contested election with a demand for Tamileelam , their demand was overwhelmingly dismissed by the people of the Eastern province. 228.077 people voted against Tamil eelam when 143,195 voted for Tamil eelam. It is noteworthy that the demand of the Northern aggressors was defeated by the people of the East.”

(May 07, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) From the Independence in 1948 to the formation of the Tamil militant organizations under the Northern leadership, the Tamils and the Muslims in the Eastern Province had lived in harmony as brothers. In these circumstances the armed struggle initiated by the power hungry aggressors have destroyed the livelihood of the Eastern people in all aspects and created a division and racial hatred between the two communities, thus the Northern leadership consolidated their aggression over the East.

Although the TULF (Tamil United Liberation Front) contested election with a demand for Tamileelam , their demand was overwhelmingly dismissed by the people of the Eastern province. 228.077 people voted against Tamil eelam when 143,195 voted for Tamil eelam. It is noteworthy that the demand of the Northern aggressors was defeated by the people of the East.

The Indo-Lanka accord signed on the 29th July 1987, merged the North and the East temporarily and gave an opportunity to the Eastern people to de-merge by referendum. Today, the de-merger of the East is confirmed by the legal action, military action and the splitting up of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP). Hence, the Eastern provincial election is also construed to be a referendum to de-merge the Eastern Province.

At the same time, it is also a historical effort to bring about unity among the all three communities in Sri Lanka. It is politically prudent that the TMVP and the Muslims leaders who are based in the East and concerned about the welfare of the Eastern Muslims have formed alliance with the United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA).The history will prove that the people of the Northern Province will also take similar position when the LTTE fascism is defeated and the parochial nationalist movements disappear from the political arena.

In the new era, a new political party with new vision is apposite and the Northern leaderships from time to time have demonstrated the Western anti imperialist stand of the South and maneuvered the Western countries to establish Tamil eelam with their help and all their efforts have become outdated.

For the last two decades, lives, belongings and cohesion among the Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese have been destroyed and the information gathered from there confirm that a suitable climate has been created to rehabilitate and reconstruct the destruction. When Sri Lanka is taking measures to get rid of the political clutches of the Western Countries, the Diaspora Tamils who have overbearing attitude, make use of the anti Sri Lankan sentiment of the Western Countries to portray the Eastern Provincial council election as terrifying event.

We believe that the Eastern Provincial Council Elections will create a situation where the people will be able to rule themselves, a solution to the ethnic problems will be found and terrorism would be wiped out. We therefore urge the Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese living in the East to consider that the forthcoming provincial council election is an election to reinforce their fundamental political rights and strengthen the hands of the government which is in power.
