(May 28, Toronto, Sri Lanka Guardian)Tamils are no more the only victims of dastardly crimes in Sri Lanka; it has now spread to the entire nation and the perpetrators can be the local goondas, no-good hangers on in public places, the police, the army and even people who hold positions of consequence using their chandiya proxies often to wreak revenge. Invasions are far too frequent immaterial whether it is a home, church, temple, school or market place. A few months ago a gang of chandiya guys with a couple in priestly garbs invaded a church in Colombo, forced the priest to sit tight on the altar chair and took on themselves to preach the word of God in their style.
This kind of outrage has become absolutely commonplace in Sri Lanka, just about everywhere in the country. And the most feared by the helpless public are those claiming to be from the forces under the pretext of search operations. Far too often, more than robbery, rape seems to be the motive so hard up must be these guys for sexual pleasures. They seek such outlets for their obsessions that they obtain it like animals in utter heat and even ending up with murdering their victims.
These devils incarnate, are they not born of mothers too? Do they not have sibling sisters and female cousins to share human values of love, affection and consideration of the best interests of kith and kin let alone morals and ethics? With continued violence in Sri Lanka almost since independence, are the people being dehumanized and falling headlong into the mire of downright barbarity?
This is all happening in a country where four leading religious faiths of the world prevail and most ceremonies, rituals and festivals are those associated with viharas, churches, temples and mosques. Virtually every public holiday is associated with religious events. This being so, what has really happened to one of the most beautiful countries in the world?
Have the country’s leaders especially the politicians gone berserk and bananas having hooked themselves to corruption to such levels as never ever known before in Sri Lanka?
As the sun began to rise on the eastern sky in Kalmunai in the Amparai District May 10, 2008, three men calling themselves as from a special branch of the army on search operations forced themselves into a house which they had obviously marked for such an outrage that had obsessed them for sometime. This is the house where the breadwinner husband-father leaves home early for work. He travels such a distance that he is home only late in the evening.
He has no option but to labour hard day in and day out. Such is the horrible development backwardness of Sri Lanka, the other choice he would have is to send his wife and two daughters as slaves to the Middle East. This brave man would have none of that but the kind of violence our housemaids face in the desert lands, visited this family on this morning but in a much worse form.
Despite the fact the room in which her daughters aged 16 and 18 were sleeping, they broke the door of this mud house and two of them proceeded to strip the girls naked and raped the screaming children who became hysterical and collapsed into unconsciousness. The third held the shock mother tight and even tied her up with a rope and awaited his turn for the outrage. Even a wild beast would have turned away in horror of what they are capable of when they have dominance over a vulnerable animal.
Once the dark devilish damnable deed was done, they left the place threatening them with death if ever they reported the matter to anyone. This is a kind of chilling chorus often cackled by criminals who covet helpless women and children to commit such horrible outrages.
Their mother with the help of a relative took them to the nearby Kalmunai Hospital but after immediate care, the hospital authorities wanted her to take them home despite them having developed high fever.
Speaking to a local newspaper, Seeta, the mother said: “The doctors were afraid to get involved; they wanted them to return home immediately.” The mother kept on wailing that she was so helpless to save her screaming daughters from this outrage. “Which mother can experience such a ruthless brutality against her children,” she asked totally broken down from this appalling experience.
When the father returned home, on hearing of this outrage, he collapsed. When he regained consciousness, he merely asked the question as to how they could get justice done! Even seeking that would only endanger their lives.
But that was not the end of their terrible traumatic ordeal.
Later that night five men armed with sharp weapons and pistols broke into their house and after severely assaulting Seeta’s husband and the relative who had stayed back to comfort them, broke lose into their daughters’ room and dragged the older girl still afflicted with a high temperature and kidnapped her in a white van. Her whereabouts are still unknown.
When the parents rushed to the police station, the officers there refused to attend to their plea and ordered them out saying they could return with proof of residential evidence in Kalmunai so that they can take some action. Seeta instead of returning to the police station next morning has now filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission. What they have suffered is beyond comprehension and the mother is hopeful that her elder daughter will return home.
What else can she hope? This has been the fate of so many mothers – indeed parents – whose children have been mercilessly snatched away from their parents for several years now by various terror elements who call the tune in the country. This is now the fate of all Sri Lankans all because the country’s governments never nipped such outrages in the bud and politicians resorted to policies of chaos in which they could thrive but at great cost to the nation.
This is Sri Lanka today!
