Ranil & Hakeem- Tale of strange bedfellows

“People who study Astrology say that your stars are not constant. They move around giving good and bad outcomes. It seems both Ranil’s and Hakeem’s stars were good and shining when they were brought to the leadership of their own parties. From there onwards, good stars have left the houses, only to be occupied by rouge stars.”

(May 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ranil Wickramasinghe came to power thanks to his stars. When his uncle JR Jayawardene, quite unwillingly handed over the leadership of UNP to Premadasa, Ranil was not considered even for the leadership battle. Gamini Dissanayake started a bitter campaign to secure the leadership of the UNP. That struggle almost broke UNP in to two. However the grand old party managed to hide the dust under the carpet to elect Premadasa as the leader.

Premadasa had no privileged upper class background. He worked very hard to climb up in UNP ladder which is only a grease pole to underprivileged party members. Premadasa had an instinct for friends and foe, within the UNP. That’s why he selected Mr. Wijethunga as his prime minister. Other senior members of the UNP, were not very happy. That’s why upper class gentlemen, Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali gathered MPs against Premadasa in Impeachment motion. Impeachment attempt of Premadasa broke UNP in to pieces.

Lalith, Premadasa and Gamini were assassinated by LTTE. Grand old party had no choice but to adopt Ranil as their leader. One could ONLY thank the stars of Ranil for his sudden and unexpected position.

Hakeem’s story is almost a similar one. Undisputed charismatic leader Ashroff was a man with a very strong foundation among Sri Lankan Muslims. His sudden death paved way to previously little known Hakeem to grab the SLMC leadership. Once again Hakeem’s stars were shining… According to the Islam tradition, a widow can’t come in to public until she spends obligatory mourning period away from the public. Hakeem grabbed that god send chance to secure his power and position in the SLMC.

In latest events, Mahinda lead government “invited” Hakeem to be the UNP chief minister candidate for the Eastern provincial elections. All Muslims wanted a single Muslim front to contest the same elections. Hakeem said no to both groups and chose to be the UNP Chief Minister Candidate. Naturally he had to resign from his Parliament seat. His game plan was to win the elections, secure the chief minister post for one of his nominees and return back to the Parliament. Hakeem gambled for very high stakes and LOST!

People who study Astrology say that your stars are not constant. They move around giving good and bad outcomes. It seems both Ranil’s and Hakeem’s stars were good and shining when they were brought to the leadership of their own parties. From there onwards, good stars have left the houses, only to be occupied by rouge stars.

Now Ranil and Hakeem face defeat after defeat! Your time is OVER and done with… now you guys are stuck with bad stars boys! (LJ)
