President + President’s 168 advisors + 110 Ministers = Mahinda Chinthanaya

(May 30, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing the Media at the UNP Media unit today, ( 30 May) ,UNP Gen. Secretary, Tissa Attanayake said , the recent price hikes on fuel and Kerosene oil is not because of World Market fluctuations as the Govt. is falsely claiming ;rather , it is because of the losses that have to be covered up due to Govt.’s corruption, profligacy, mismanagement and maintenance of its largest Cabinet of Ministers (110 Ministers ) in the World and President’s 168 advisors who are enjoying the best of perks and benefits at the expense of the common man.

Rs 28000 million rupees and Rs. 7400 million! Are needed to maintain the Cabinet and the President alone! The President’s foreign tours as well as of the Ministers also consume a large amount of country’s revenue additionally , reaping no benefit for the country ,except serving their selfish fun and frolic .There have been instances , where President has traveled with a large retinue just to see a cricket match .Whose money is being spent on these jaunts?, he asked . Mihinair, the National carrier which was started by the Govt. amidst controversies sent Rs. 300 million down the drain of people’s money. The Govt. has still not taken any action against those who were responsible for this wastage.

How can the President and this Govt. blame the World market , as this is the Govt. which promised at the last elections that it will not burden the people based on World market prices , and will not allow world market to dictate us ?.

The Govt.’s desperation to hide the true picture was exposed when the IOC Chairman divulged that this Govt. is appropriating a sum of Rs.56.00 as taxes per litre of fuel. Hence, if the Govt. wants to give relief to the people, it can cut back on its tax. But, it cannot do this because it has to recover its wastages, corruption and illicit commission earnings, which it will be unable to meet without imposing these taxes on the poor masses including the Kerosene oil users.

The UNP which has always stood steadfastly with the people and has earned an exclusive and exceeding popularity for this cannot stand idle and watch this Govt. to continue with its atrocities against the people .Therefore it is launching a protest campaign on 3rd June, he exhorted.

On that day, at sharp 12.00 noon as a protest, all vehicles are to blare the horns, glare the headlights and stop ‘dead’ wherever they are, for five minutes! He urged every one to join in this as this is done for their benefit.

I am so glad he is enjoying people's wealth. The people who elected this corrupt ruthless murderer and enjoy the suffering and torture of Tamils should be punished; so, let them pay for this guy to build his fortress.

Many continue to heap criticism about the jumbo size cabinet of the present (and past) government (s) of Sri Lanka. Little do they realise that this is an indirect consequence of the UNP constitution thrust on the country in 1978. Proportionate representation and many other amendments have resulted in a system where no party can muster a vaible majority to govern. Thus coalitions, agreements and horse trading for MPs have become part and parcel of the politics of the country. The UNP which chained and padlocked our country to this constitution (and threw the keys away), seems to act as if they are not part of the problem.
You (UNP) were part of the problem and your leader was a member of that infamous cabinet of 1978!

Instead of postponing consitutional changes based on minor issues, please take some meaningful steps to get us out of this mess you created. Breaking pots, stopping traffic and visiting rural markets may not help.
