No Communal Violence in Kattankudy says CM

(May 25, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka Guardian) A peaceful environment prevails in Kattankudy, Batticaloa after the disturbances which prevailed in the past few days. The situation has returned to normality following the mediation of Eastern Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan and Provincial Minister M.L.A.M. Hisbullah.

Both of them visited the mosque at Kattankudy and had a special discussion. They broached the situation, which prevailed in the area and proposed action that should be initiated to bring normality to the area. Addressing the Muslims at the mosque thereafter, Mr. Chandrakanthan stressed the need for unity to defeat attempts made by certain groups to provoke communal clashes. Certain elements are endeavouring to create disturbances in the area. He pointed out that the civilians will be deprived of the democratic freedom they had received amidst a very difficult environment, if they encouraged these elements.

Minister Hisbullah underlined the need to eschew narrow concepts to accelerate eastern development, consolidating democracy they enjoy after two decades. Many Provincial Ministers and Councillors were present on this occasion. Reporters pointed out that calm has returned to the area.

Meanwhile, Minister M.L.A.M. Hisbullah who visited the District this morning said security in the entire area has been consolidated.

In a special statement received by the Sri Lanka Guardian, he said the disturbances, which prevailed in the area had eased and normality has returned. He and Chief Minister Chandrakanthan had a special discussion on the issue with Police Officers. Instructions were given on the appropriate measures that should be taken. The need of the hour is to work together giving up narrow differences. Minister Hisbullah noted that the past should be forgotten and action taken to develop the area.
