The Great Pretender

“He is a pretender. Pretenders are worse than murderers. You must preach what you practice. He is a hypocrite with no human values. It was not long ago that he created a disgraceful show at Rupavahini Corporation, assaulting the news editor followed by many incidents where Rupavahini staff were mercilessly assaulted by his goons. He should at least now know that example in better than precept.”

(May 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) It was quite amusing to read in a weekend English newspaper of May 18 the news item "Mervyn extends liquor ban in Kelaniya by two days."

The idea is good especially because Kelaniya is a sacred Buddhist area. But this should have come from a right thinking religious person: not from Mervyn Silva who is just a goon creating problems to many people, specially media people.

He is a pretender. He should at least now know that example in better than precept.

May be after his recent accident he has learnt that it is Ditta Dhamma Vedhaneeya Karma and has turned over a new leaf. He has all the rights to have one week of Vesak celebrations in Kelaniya, but what about the security situation in the country? Moreover this is a time the people find it difficult to make ends meet. So wouldn't it be a meritorious act to feed the poor people?

Lord Buddha has preached that in Buddhism pride of place should be given to prathipatti pooja and not amisa pooja. True spirit of Vesak should be characterised by practice of loving kindness, and compassion towards all living beings and selflessness service. By trying to have celebrations for one week will he be able to achieve this? He boasts of banning the sale of beef in Kelaniya for a week, but that is done all over the island during Vesak. Self-praise is no recommendation.

Once again Mervyn has shown his true colours. In the latest incident on May 20 Mervyn Silva's henchmen had assaulted Sirasa mediamen, who had tried to televise the Vesak celebrations at Kiribathgoda.

According to the newscast over the electronic media, there had been some policemen on duty about 15 metres away, but they had turned a blind eye to the incident and still no arrests have been made. May be the police is scared of Vermin. Is he such an indispensable element? Todate no action has yet been taken against the Rupavahini drama he enacted in December.

This is not the first time he has attacked Sirasa mediamen. The independent media organisations have deplored these actions every time they took place. But what has come out of them? Nothing. It's like playing the violin to a deaf elephant.

Over to your Mr. President; do something to reform this undesirable element.

A recent newspaper carried a cartoon depicting the President mollycoddling Mervyn on his lap while Mangala Samaraweera was walking up to the disciplinary committee. Where is justice Mr. President?

Two extra days liquor ban indeed a very good thing. It is an excellent thing, not for normal Sri Lankan citizens, but for black-market liquor dealers and moonshiners.
Banning liquor or beef or use of law and order to discipline people is not the Buddhist principle to begin with, even though we are keen to ban this and that in the name of Buddha. Buddha himself gave up his chance to become a law maker and went on a deferent path. While other religious leaders, turn in to law makers that we so call Buddhists in Sri Lanka also keenly follow. Now Vesak time in Sri Lanka remind me of Islamabad.
