“Govt. aware that it cannot win on fair elections is going hammer and tongs using foul methods”

(May 05, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing the Media today (5May), Lakshman Kiriellla , UNP M.P., never thought that the UNP will come forward to contest the Eastern Provincial Council elections . It was hoping against hope that UNP will keep away like at the Municipal elections.

However, after having realised that the UNP-SLMC alliance is having a definite edge, the Govt. has gone haywire . Hence, in a desperate bid is resorting to all the tricks and treachery to win the elections. Among so many intimidations, election law violations using State property and vehicles for election campaigns; influencing Govt. servants to vote for the UFPA, it has started another massive racket on polling cards according to reliable sources: through the Defence Ministry; it has printed official blank polling cards and temporary identity cards using the Grama Sevaka offices. The main sinister aim of this is to distribute them among those voters numbering over 170, 0000 who have not been issued polling cards, which non issuance is also a deliberate act of the Govt. To facilitate this voting racket, he asserted. There are also so many who have been displaced and without fixed abodes in the East; the Govt. is trying to use these identity cards and polling cards to get these votes. It is also the Govt.’s plan to make use of these votes in the early hours of voting before the rackets are bared, he exhorted.

Govt. is fully aware that it cannot win the election if conducted fair and free, and on the people’s votes and free will. So, it is descending to any level, any racket, any violence to win the elections. A tendency it has always displayed in all its governance.

This is a Govt. which suffered a heavy defeat at the Presidential elections in the East on votes. How can such a Govt. hope to win now after making the lives of the people of the East more miserable, more desperate and after devastating their future , if any, they had earlier.? Has it ever proved in any way that it has cared for the inhabitants of the East , although it is making bogus pre election promises once again?, he concluded
