(May 26, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Supreme Court today granted an interim order preventing the allocation of 500 houses built around the Degavapiya sacred area in the Ampara district while granting leave to proceed in a fundamental rights case by Ellawala Medananda therea.
The thera in his petition said that the allocation of the houses to Muslims would violate the rights of the Sinahalese and Tamils living in the area and therefore the houses built in the area should not be allocated to one community.
Accordingly a bench comprising of Shirani Bandaranayaka, Nimal Gamini Amaratunga and K.Sripavan suspended the distribution of the houses and ordered the respondents including the Government Agent forAmpara to appear in courts on June 11. - Sri Lanka Guardian
