(April 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing a Media conference today (8 April), UNP M.P. S. B. Dissanayake, re-echoed the UNP view that violence in any form should be condemned while expressing his condolence in relation to the death of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.
With the Sinhala New Year round the corner, this Govt. is going to make this New Year the blackest ever for the people in Sri Lanka’s history citing the lame and oft heard false excuse: the ethnic war!
Sri Lanka`s inflation has reached the highest ever level at 28..1 % . While the cost of living too has sky rocketed so much so that the common man is unable to have even one square meal a day. Even Bangla Desh, a poorer country than Sri Lanka has been able to keep down the inflation at 11 %. Similarly, other countries of the region like India, 6%; Pakistan 8%; Philippines 7%; Thailand 4% have been able to maintain these levels. Govt.`s stock explanation for this disastrous economic situation is World market fuel and commodity price increases . If that is so, aren`t other countries of the region also affected by the world market fluctuations? How are they able to develop their economy while Sri Lanka economy is plummeting? He asked.

Dr. Harsha De Silva, a leading economist has openly contradicted the falsehoods uttered by the Central Govt. Governor, the Treasury Secretary and Finance Ministry Secretary who are all Govt. political appointees. He blamed Govt`s indiscriminate desperate borrowing and reckless printing of money as the cause of this country`s economic morass. Indeed the IMF and ESCAP, too have with facts and statistics after a survey clearly disproved Govt.`s grandiose claims aimed at deceiving the people .
Therefore, he pleaded that at least now the Govt. showed concern and mercy for the people who voted it into power expressing the truth and remedying its fiscal bungles and monetary policies without cheating on the people and leading them blindfolded Zimbabwe style.
