(Mach 26, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Leader of Opposition and of the UNP, Ranil Wickremesinghe warned the people to brace themselves for a Black new year, this year in view of the Govt.’s inefficiency and misdeeds which have driven the country to the brink of disaster and economic ruin.
Addressing the party supporters at the launch of the ‘Janabala Sena ’protest campaign at UNP Headquarters , Sri Kotha , he said, under the Rajapakse Govt. policy of nourishment for the Rajapakses and impoverishment for the people , it preaches austerity for the masses while the Govt. is practicing self serving extravagance. Therefore, this New Year is only ‘black’ for the people who cannot even afford to buy their staple food, rice, bread and flour, he added.
He asked why Unions and consumer associations are silent despite the Govt. heaping all the burdens on the masses and there is rampant corruption? Even the consumer price index is being manipulated to hide the truth, he lamented. The new program of the UNP is to whip up support of the people to oust this tyrannical inefficient corrupt regime, he exhorted.
The new project is designed to eliminate the shortcomings in the Party and will guard against Govt. maneuverings with election and electoral processes. At the last Presidential elections, the party lost 300,000 votes in the Colombo electoral District alone due to elimination of names from the electoral lists, he exclaimed.
This program, a revolutionary concept will ensure that there is a party representative, Jana bala Sena Nayake attending to every ten households and their needs, working in close co operation.
