(March 07, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) On behalf of EROS we condemn the horrific killing of TNA MP Mr K. Sivanesan who died as a result of a claymore attack. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family who he leaves behind. Our condolences also go to the family of his driver Periyannan Maheswararajah, 27, father of one, from Cheddiku'lam, Vavuniyaa.
This culture of targeting and killing politicians whether they are Tamil or Sinhalese is never ending and this idea of targeting politicians was implanted onto Sri Lankan soil when the LTTE’s Prabhakaran shot Mayor Alfred Duraiyappah in 1975 outside a temple in Jaffna (Inside an Elusive Mind/Tigers of Lanka, M.R. Narayanswamy). The Government of Sri Lanka have an obligation to safeguard the security of MP's and even politicians not elected as MP’s irrespective of what party they belong to and whether the party is supportive of the Government or not. The fact of the matter is that the Government and the Intelligence authorities in Sri Lanka are doing what best they can. Likewise the LTTE too have an obligation to safeguard their own (TNA) MP's who are killed within territories under their control.
One cannot rule out the high possibility of Mr K. Sivanesan being killed as a result of a claymore mine being planted by LTTE cadres themselves. Maybe cadres of the LTTE mistook the vehicle transporting Mr K. Sivanesan. The fact that it happed within an area under their illegal control indicates that he may have been deliberately targeted. It has become common for the Government of Sri Lanka or the army to be pin-pointed and blamed for every claymore blast or bombing that results, in the killing of politicians or civilians by the pro-LTTE media. The LTTE are wholly responsible for planting thousands of claymore mines that has resulted in the serious injuries and killings of hundreds of civilians from all communities. It is ironic that their front charity based in London "White Pigeon" raises funds to clear landmines planted by the LTTE cadres themselves.
The LTTE are single handedly responsible for sending thousands of under-age child cadres onto the front-line like "Lambs to the Slaughter". The United Nations have ignored all these atrocities by the LTTE for decades and have failed to impose tough sanctions on the LTTE till date. Instead of supporting the Government of Sri Lanka in its fight against terrorism similar to the Al-Queda threat faced by the US and Britain, all these so-called powerful and responsible countries can do is point their bloody fingers on the Government of Sri Lanka and pressurize them to negotiate with these blood thirsty terrorists being the LTTE and end its war against terrorism. No country has a right to impose its authority on Sri Lanka for the Government and the armed forces are doing what is right for our country, its citizens and its future. There can be no sustainable peace in Sri Lanka as long as the LTTE exists and other armed groups in Sri Lanka.
I disagree with TNA MP's Mr S. Jeyanandamoorthy claim that the Government of Sri Lanka is conducting these elections as a prelude for permanent separation of the East from the North; to institutionalize the forcibly altered ethnic composition of the East; to legitimize its genocidal agenda to the outside world and to get foreign funds for the oppression of Tamils in the name of their development. The truth is the LTTE leadership is unable to stomach the fact that the EAST is now under the control of the Government of Sri Lanka and not under their Tiger clutches. It will not be long before the North too comes under the total control of the Government after the armed forces have crushed the LTTE into calling it a day and ending its terrorist campaign against the Government and the Sri Lankan people. Prabhakaran will end up like Saddam Hussain of Iraq, either dragged out from his underground bunker or killed as a result of Ariel bombardment and “the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) will not be around to bail Prabhakaran out this time”. Prabhakaran does not have the mental capacity to swallow a cyanide capsule that he so freely encourages and forces his brainwashed cadres to use. Neither does he have the guts to top himself like Hitler did in order to avoid being captured alive or killed.
The elections in the EAST are being conducted in order to restore peace and normalcy in the region. The only obstacles at present are these armed groups carrying weapons illegally. The Government of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Defense are addressing these problems which is why the Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse ordered these armed groups to hand over their weapons before the local elections. If they have failed to comply then action will be taken by the authorities concerned.
The TNA are not contesting because they do not stand a chance in the elections like the Eelavar Democratic Front (EDF) does. The TNA represents the LTTE and not the Tamil speaking people. TNA MP's have to comply with what the LTTE leadership instructs them to do or they face certain death. I sympathize with the EPRLF (S), TELO and members of TULF who are aligned to the TNA. These TNA MP's do not have any freedom to voice their true opinion. If they do so and it is not in the interests of the LTTE or brings the LTTE into disrepute, they are killed and the blame is labeled onto the Government of Sri Lanka.
The Government of Sri Lanka is doing all that it can in order to ensure that these elections are free and fair. It is the armed groups that operate in the East that are jeopardizing the Governments efforts by intimidating, abducting, extorting and killing innocent civilians and members of other political parties including ours where we lost our member Rasamanickam Thiyagarasa last week who was abducted and murdered as a result of being poisoned. TNA MP's must disassociate themselves with the LTTE and re-join the democratic mainstream like Aaramugam Thondaman of the CWC has and there is a high possibility that we can all work together on a united platform and do more for the Tamil speaking people.
The LTTE leadership and the TNA need to get this message into their heads and that is Tamil Eelam is never going to become a reality. We may end up having an autonomous state like Scotland in the UK or even a Tamil Nadu within a united Sri Lanka, but never an independent nation. Separation is never going to materialize. The LTTE are being militarily defeated by the armed forces and they are waving their political card now using these TNA MP's to criticize the Government publicly.
A political solution by the Government of Sri Lanka will be put forward once the elections are over. Problems are being created with the finalization and release from the APRC because of chauvinist parties such as the JVP and the JHU. I am confident that the Government will bring a final peace settlement for the Tamil speaking people which, includes, the Muslims in due course. Until then we must do what’s best for our people and for the future of this country.
