(March 10, Toronto, Sri Lanka Guardian) On the penultimate day of the Annual Music Festival of Thamil Isai Kalaamanram of Ontario, Canada, our Consulting Editor (Sri Lanka Guardian) Victor Karunairajan who also serves in the same capacity this organization was invited to the stage halfway through the evening's performance of classical dances, vocals and instrumentals and was ceremoniously awarded the Gold Medal.
Inviting Victor Karunairajan, President Thampiah Siripathy said that Thamil Isai Kalaamanram was deeply indebted to the love and support he had given to this cultural organization for the last ten years and also in particular the editorial help he had rendered in preparing a Students Guide for Grade Two to Seven in vocals, violin, veena and flute which was published on that occasion. "His contribution to encourage our children and young people to become familiar with our cultural traditions especially to be knowledgeable and even experts at it, have been very supportive to the manram." said Mr Siripathy.
When invited to say a few words, Mr Karunairajan fighting for words struck by the surprise sprung on him, said his dedication and commitment were for the children and young people and his dream has always been that they will all flower in their rich culture and move forward as good citizens of the community. Thanking the manram officials and members for the gesture, he said the privilege was his to serve the organization but even more, to be of service to children and young people. He told them: "Go forth in pride under the banner and spirit of our sacred culture and serve humanity with your talents, skills and ideals."
Mr Karunairajan was also draped with the Golden Shawl by the Secretary of the Thamil Isai Kalaamanram Mr Maheswaran. On the final day of the music festival, Mr Karunairajan was among those invited to give away the trophies and certificates.
The Thamil Isai Kalaamanram was launched over fifteen years ago by volunteers to promote the musical arts of the community. A charitable non-profit organization, it has its own headquarters and auditorium in Scarborough, Toronto. The manram conducts annual examinations in the style of Trinity College of Music, London UK annually in Bharata Natyam, vocals and instrumentals and last year almost 3000 children sat for examinations from Grade One to Teachers' grade.
The manram conducts regular concerts for students to become stage-familiar and concert-oriented and on occasions invites senior and overseas artistes to perform in Toronto. It has a youth organization that supports its activities and also holds regular workshops and seminars. Apart from these activities, it also works in close liaison with the teachers and helps them with their needs in many ways.
