Father Jeyanesan collecting more funds in Canada

“Last year Father Jeyanesan broke away from the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India and tried to appropriate under false pretense that he had the authority, the properties of the American Ceylon Mission that have been vested in the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India. His several court actions against the Jaffna Diocese has failed.”

(March 13, Ohio, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Non-Roman Rev Father Sellathurai Jeyanesan against whom an arrest warrant was issued recently by a court in Sri Lanka is busy collecting more funds in Canada especially among the Sri Lankan Tamil community in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada.

At a recent meeting held in Scarborough, otherwise known as "Little Jaffna", and presided over by Mr Jayasingh David a former principal of the Nuffield Deaf and Blind School in Jaffna and a close relative of Father Jeyanesan, this priest with a bogus doctorate distributed pledge forms to those who attended the meeting emphasizing the urgency to raise funds for his several activities in the Eastern Province.

Some of those who attended this meeting privately expressed their reservations and even their concerns about the integrity of Father Jeyanesan. Observed an elder: "We are very saddened that this man has caused a split in the church just because he could not become the bishop."

Last year Father Jeyanesan broke away from the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India and tried to appropriate under false pretense that he had the authority, the properties of the American Ceylon Mission that have been vested in the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India. His several court actions against the Jaffna Diocese has failed.

Over a period of ten years he was believed to have raised massive fundings in the US, Europe and Israel in the name of the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India in whose employment he was until last year but he has neither accounted for them or submitted the relevant documents and instruments.

He broke away from the church when he was unsuccessful in becoming the head of the church. Early 2006, he was openly accused at the annual Diocesan Council sessions of the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South of India of attempting to sexually abuse a fellow priest's wife when her husband was away from station. It is generaly believed that this incident affected his chances of becoming the bishop.

He was reported to have attempted to bribe the General Secetary of the Church of South India in Chennai in India that governs the Jaffna Diocese to appoint him as the bishop.

Father Jeyanesan has to appear in a court in Jaffna, Sri Lanka before the end of the month along with his fellow defendants.
