Diaspora Tamils and Muslims resolve to forge a common front

‘Minority problems cannot be resolved through violence and that dialogue is essential for a sensible political resolution to the conflict. Both Sri Lankan government and the LTTE will not achieve their ends through violence. It is essential that Muslims and others are included in resolving the problem and that human rights must be respected by both the state and others - in particular the state has more responsibility to protect human rights. Outside world must not impose a solution in Sri Lanka. The role of the international community is to create mechanisms for a peaceful resolution like the recent Norwegian effort. Tamil people’s right to self determination must be recognised’.

(March 30, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) At the meeting held on March 29 (Saturday), 2008 in London the alternative vices to the extreme LTTE fronts in the UK decided to form a common body to agree and work on a minimum working programme. Forty three members representing organisations and politically active individuals including Tamils and Muslims, who subscribe to peaceful and non violent resolution to the conflict in Sri Lanka attended the meeting. The meeting was held at Watling Community Centre, in Edgware, Middlesex.

The Guest Speaker at the meeting was Andrew Dismore MP. He stressed the need to bring peace in Sri Lanka. He said: ‘Minority problems cannot be resolved through violence and that dialogue is essential for a sensible political resolution to the conflict.

We also went to some detail about the five basic principles of freedom attached in the UN Charter for Human Rights. He explained the British government position on human rights by referring to the recent statement by the British Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

During discussions, he expressed the need to reflect the wider views of the Diaspora Tamils and emphasised the need to take a structured approach by those wanting to influence the government decision makers. When questions were asked about the attitude and approach of All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils (APPGT) headed by Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP to engage only with the LTTE fronts, he asked those present to pressurise the APPGT to reflect the their views as well. He assured to make representation to the APPGT in this regard.

Those present then engaged in an interactive discussion and decided to appoint a committee consisting of fifteen members to proceed through the structural formalities to set up an umbrella body and agree a common work programme for the evolving group.

H H Wickramasinha, the Media Secretary to the Minister of Community Development and Social Inequality Eradication (Sri Lanka) participated in the discussion programme.

Three members explained to all those present their experience when they went to the Parliament to have a meeting with Keith Vaz MP. Members present expressed serious concerns about the APPGT taking one sided approach with the only engagement of the LTTE front British Tamil Forum and the LTTE activists to project only their agenda. It was decided that a letter expressing the concerns of the cross section of the members present is sent to the APPGT and those present detailed the issues of concerns to be taken up with the APPGT members.

Sir,

We need more than 44 to counter the LTTE. As you know, London is a hotspot for LTTE activities. Also, I think you should arrange a meeting with Gordon Brown. We need to go right to the top instead of wasting time with useless money makes like Vaz.

The meeting organised by Jayadevan, the TMVP and Company including radical Jihadists such as S.M.M.Bazeer did not include representatives from the mainstream Tamil political parties EPDP, EPRLF, EROS or TULF.

The organisers state that 43 members from different political organisations and parties attended the meeting. I would like to see the specific names of these people and what parties they represent....

Jayadevan is a hardcore LTTE sympathiser who only switched alligience because of his underhand dealings.

Rt Hon. Keith Vaz, Chair of the APPG(T) did not want to see him or his colleagues who represent the TMVP and the Jihad Group because these people are terrorists living in London.

This meeting was not an opne meeting and was organised in just like the LTTE organise theirs. After all its not surprising since Jayadevan works for the TMVP and funds the Jihad Group headed by S.M.M. Bazeer.

These people are trying to cause a division amongst the Tamil people by divinding the Tamils between the North and East. They are supportice of the Sinhalese Governments Chauvinist agenda of ethnic cleansing.

The number two anonymous reflects hatred towards muslims, Jayathevan and appear to fabricate by saying that meeting involved political parties. The main news does not state anything about political parties.

This anonymous piece is written by a LTTE man or a sympathysier. I could only see reflection of hate of LTTE type.

Only LTTE and the EROS hates the Muslims and they must be the culprits.

Sir,

Is the above true? Did this meeting include members of the Jihad Group? I think Jihad can be a real danger for both Sri Lankan and India. It is better not to support any extreamist groups.

Also, I am dissapointed to learn that you did not include any of the mainstream political parties. EPDP, TULF, PLOTE, EPRLF and EROS shoudl have bee included in any meaningful coalition.

TMVP is very new and lacks the experience of above mentioned parties. Thats why Karuna ended up in prision while Devananda is a Minister.

Please see the difference between stupid and clever.

EROS must behave like a mature force. They must stop engaging in cultivating hate against indviduals and groups. They seems to be running a bit low at present as events are not turning in their favour. Politics is patience. EROS must do a self analysis seriously. They must stop this campaign of propping up hate.

Their campaign against Baseer calling him a Jihadi man is similar to the Muslim hate culture of the LTTE.

If EROS wishes to take this hate path against persons there is lot to loose for them.
