(February 23, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The million-dollar question in Sri Lanka today is about the whereabouts of the Rev Sellathurai Jeyanesan, the man with an illegally appropriated church but without canons or creed, has a bogus doctorate for himself from a dubious Dutch organization that disappeared from cyberspace the moment it was exposed as a fake, and now especially as February draws to an end with salaries to be paid to his hangers-on in bright red vestments. Jeyanesan was last believed to have been seen in a dollar shop in Toronto’s Scarborough, a region known as "Little Jaffna" and for good reasons too.

Recently, a case in which he figures as a respondent was called in a Jaffna Court and he was noted as absconding for the third time. Having tested the patience of the court too long, this priest who presumes to be above all customs, traditions and laws, even more courtesies and decencies, literally courted the wrath of the court. The court was left with no choice but to issue an arrest warrant on him.

This particular case deals with his attempt to seize the properties of the American Ceylon Mission that are vested in the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India (JDCSI). In respect of this, he was believed to have impacted on the Wider Churches Ministries of the United Church of Christ and given this organization a false report to persuade them to help him appropriate these properties for his purpose intent on breaking up the JDCSI.

Now that he has an arrest warrant issued against him, he has the choice to surrender and allow himself to be formally arrested and produced in court. He has unaccounted millions at his disposal, funds he collected over a period of ten years or even more in the name of the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India (JDCI) which he has not submitted yet, or rather appropriated for himself, to be able to hire a sucker or two to bail him out. But it is hoped that he does not exploit the laws of the country the way he proudly remarked to a retired principal that in Sri Lanka everything has a price and he has the funds to buy the entire Sri Lankan legislature.

Of course the funds he is talking about are what he has been garnering in the US, Europe particularly in Holland and Israel as a priest of the JDCSI for widows, orphans and needy people especially in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. His collection tactics need showcase projects and that he has, but they all belong to the JDCSI and launched when he was a priest of that church. Far too many people and organizations are vulnerable to clever crooks and some, like one in the Netherlands, have their own private agendas and interests in lending vast sums of funds to organizations that canvas for their support.

This fake priest, self-made leader of a dissident group of half-baked theologians and thugs in cassocks have become a rule unto himself bent on destroying the nearly 200 years old JDCSI just because he was not made the bishop for which he even tried to bribe the General Secretary of the Church of South India (CSI) with two bottles of whiskey, a bottle of perfume, chocolates and Us $500.00 in five crispy notes. The whole thing was summarily returned and the good CSI General Secretary had the inspiration to accept the notes towards a refugee fund and issued a receipt for same on the spot. When asked why there was cash in a bag, Jeyanesan, caught in the soup like the boy up the guava tree in another’s garden, said that was for refugees.

Later, Jeyanesan was believed to have reacted to one of the two who accompanied him that the lady had no right to take the cash if he was not getting the bishopric. By this time this fake priest knew the JDCSI bishop will be appointed as allowed by the CSI Constitution when a local diocese is deadlocked or otherwise unable to recommend candidates for the bishopric. An attempt was tried to persuade the CSI to appoint Jeyanesan as the bishop by a select party of cowboys from Sri Lanka traveling to Chennai to meet the CSI officials there.

This party reflected the views of the clan that had dominated the JDCSI for many years. It returned to Colombo like the Grand Old Duke of York but they didn’t have ten thousand men; just some lackeys and knee-bents enamoured by the Greenbacks of the US and a chance to savour the delights of Chennai’s film world and its many splendoured attractions. Jeyanesan had generously oiled them for this mission and there was that Whiskey-crazed Dr Dhyan Chand Carr to guide them along at virtually Rs.10,000 a night of drinking; that is his price for his services which he really volunteers for his yearnings for the Genie in the Bottle.

Jeyanesan’s action to breakaway from the JDCSI is only for the reason that he could not become the bishop of it and without this position, he had the nightmare horror of having to submit all accounts for a period of over ten years. Since his mission had failed, he was left with no alternative but to break away and claim, now that he has set up a church therefore all accounts will be passed on to it. What kind of law will allow that is something difficult to understand but the truth is that this man has appropriated a part of the church by sheer plunder and this is a criminal offence. Furthermore, he is dabbling in unaccounted millions raised with false means and this is illegal too. On top of it, he has committed contempt of court by absconding himself when he should have been present when the case against him and his co-respondents was called.
But what is incredible is the fact that there are even people who will hang on this man’s tail against an organization that has been the Fortress of Faith for the JDCSI community for almost 200 years. Just who are these people hanging on to this guy who will not hesitate to betray them if the going becomes rough as it eventually will, sooner than later. After all Sellathurai Jeyanesan resorted to fraud and deceit and he betrayed his own church.
