Local Govt. Poll in East under Terrorists
(January 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) It has become a duty incumbent on us not only to protect the country from the terrorists, but also to fight against dictatorial actions and trends of the Government, opposition leader and leader of the United National Front, Ranil Wickramasinghe said.
The President has no solutions to any of the burning problems in the country. The only answer he has is procrastination and promises. Even the Constitutional Councils which are a vital organ for appointment of members to other Commissions is being delayed by him with ulterior motives, he said.
This delay is another measure of the President to appoint his own corrupt and unscrupulously subservient individuals to cover up Govt misdeeds and malpractices, he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Rajapakse regime has earned for itself a repute (or disrepute!) for creating a number of ‘firsts’ in Sri Lanka, he said.
According to Ranil, “The Govt. which made the most promises at elections, but, failed to honour any after being elected; causing people to make attempts to commit suicide because of dire poverty; establishing the largest Cabinet in the world; Ministers increasing their perks while people have nothing even to eat; price hikes on essential commodities by the hour and for effectively camouflaging the national burning issues.”
“In keeping with this evil propensity, the Govt. is trying to create another ‘first’- it is trying to allow an armed group spreading terror in the East to be registered as a political party,” he added.
In the circumstances, Ranil urged the appointment of independent Commissions to ensure a fair and free local Govt. election in the East, adding that the elections in Batticaloa may be marred by violence encouraged indirectly, by the Govt. supporting armed groups terrorizing the area.
