(January 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The JVP said yesterday it would fight tooth and nail to stop the government from implementing the 13th Amendment which the party said does not have legitimacy as the term of the then Parliament which proposed the 13th Amendment was extended through a referendum without holding an election.
The party also said the 13th Amendment was something which was forced on Sri Lanka by India.
JVP Leader, Somawansa Amarasinghe told a press conference yesterday they would fight against it legally, socially and through various institutions.
Party Leader, Somawansa Amarasinghe told a press conference yesterday that terrorism should be crushed first while establishing democracy in the conflict areas. He said the provincial administration of North and the East should be established in a democratic manner.
The party also suggested all persons who were affected by the conflict should be paid reasonable compensation. This he said should follow de-separatism and abolition of communalism.
He also called for a proper census in the country to get a proper account of the minority and majority population.
He explained that a change in the constitution should be made thereafter when a suitable environment for it is created. .Mr. Amarasinghe reminded that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was bound to abolish the Executive Presidency when his term is over.
“We as the JVP will force the government to implement these proposals,” he said.
He said the party still holds that the provincial councils should be abolished as it had not and would not solve the national issue. The JVP Leader explained that more than 60% of the Tamils live elsewhere although it was introduced to solve the problems of the Tamils who live in the North and the East.
“Wellawatte where majority of Tamils live is the town with the highest number of high rise buildings in the country and these Tamil will not be prepared to go to the North and the East leaving their property even if a new unit of devolution is introduced in the North and the East,” he said.
He said it was ironical to see that the SLFP which participated in Sathyagraha campaign in 1987 when the 13th amendment was introduced was now preparing to implement it fully today.
