(December, 11, Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka Guardian) Senior journalist and editor of Makkal Kural and Trinity Mirror dailies, M Shanmugavel passed away after a prolonged illness on Tuesday morning at his residence in Chennai.
Leaders of political parties, media houses and journalist associations have mourned the demise of the 80-year old bachelor. The cremation was slated at the Besant Nagar crematorium in the evening.
Fondly called ‘MS’ by all, Shanmugavel started his journalistic career with Daily Thanthi in 1947. A diligent and hard-working man, MS soon gained a name for himself in the newspaper office. Later, he came out from Daily Thanthi and joined Alai Osai in 1971.
By joining hands with doyen of Indian journalism, T R Ramaswamy (TRR) in 1973, MS ventured into Makkal Kural, an evening daily which expressed the thoughts and opinions of the public.
Both TRR and MS carved a niche for themselves with their vociferous writings in Makkal Kural. When TRR passed away in 1990 after launching News Today in 1982, MS served as the editor of the paper for three years.
Later, he started a new English daily named Trinity Mirror and actively served as its guiding source till his death. He had also headed the South Indian Journalists Federation.
News Today and Malai Sudar Editor T R Jawahar and TRR’s wife Indira Ramaswamy paid their homage to the veteran journalist at his residence. AIADMK senior leaders O Pannerselvam, D Jayakumar, Sulochana Sampath and others too paid their respects to MS.
AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa has expressed her heartfelt condolence too. ‘MS was a stalwart of journalism. He was abreast of world-wide events and always stood on the side of truth. His sudden demise is an irrepairable loss to journalism,’ she said.
The Chennai Press Club too has condoled the death of MS. In a message, joint secretary of the Club Bharathi Thamizhan has said a senior man in the filed of journalism has passed away. The Tamilnadu Union of Journalists has also condoled the death of MS.
