UNP Condemns (Dr.) Mervyn’s Drama at Rupawahini

(December, 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Lakshman Kiriella, UNP Parliamentaran addressing the Media at the UNP Media unit today (28 Dec) referred to the rowdy-ism and thuggery of Minister Mervyn Silva and his under world group displayed against the News Director of Rupavahini Corporation as neither the first of the incidents nor was it done on his own initiative. There is ample testimony to prove that it was done at the behest of the President and the Govt. he alleged.

This assault on the News Director of the Rupavahini was the consequence of his not publishing a speech of Mervyn Silva at Matara on 26th Dec. The Minister made a viciously abusive speech full of filth directed against Anura Bandaranayake. Mangala Samaraweera and Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Rupavahini Corporation however following its code of ethics and decency found it unfit to air this, but, the dishonourably Hon.Minister, his President and Govt. thought this filthy abuse as the most fit and vital piece of speech for publication. What is most surprising is that the President, the highest in the hierarchy of the country too was on stage and enjoyed when Mervyn Silva abused in raw filth.

The following day, as this was not aired by the Rupavahini, it is learnt that Mervyn has reported the omission to the President who had instructed to take this violent course of action. This is why, that no arrests have been made on this episode, and Kiriella challenged the Govt. to prosecute those involved if this was not a concerted effort of all those of the Govt. hierarchy. Of occurs, like in all similar earlier episodes, the Govt.

Manipulate this too by producing some stray individual as the culprit, he added. The Govt. fears to arrest Mervyn Silva because it knows he would expose those behind this when prosecuted.

There are now in the cabinet a number of Ministers who are existing not because they are serving the people although they are there as people’s representatives ,but because they are engaged in this type of low activities pandering to the President’s self seeking diabolic ambitions getting cheap credit and favour from him, he asserted.
