(December, 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) A shocking news has surfaced that the Tamil Makkal Vidutalai Pulighal (TMVP), an Eastern Sri Lanka based politico-military movement has abducted three relatives of a Member of Parliament belonging to the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance.
According to the latest news, the police have started an investigation. The police have approached the TMVP to investigate further. Recalling a Sinhala proverb: ‘Horage Ammagen Pena Ahanawa Wage’ (i.e., inquiring about the thief from his mother), how can the police investigate these crimes when they are embedded in the crime.
The news of kidnap was reported few hours after TMVP held a massive political demonstration in the Feber Stadium in Batticaloa. The rally was an indicative of a turning point for the TMVP that it is taking a democratic political path. TMVP is not a registered political party in Sri Lanka. International Community and some section of the opinion in Sri Lanka calls the TMVP a paramilitary outfit backed by the Sri Lankan military. The TMVP played an important role to liberate the East. No one had given credit to the TMVP for its role for helping the government to liberate the East. This crucial fact is an established secret. This shows to the extent the government is using Tamil groups like TMVP and EPDP to achieve its objectives.
There is accusations that TMVP’s second in command Pillayan is being manipulated by the government to carryout its dirty work. When TMVP started its activities, its frontline activists were very eager to play a participatory political role without involving in any violent activities. They were dependent on the government and its security forces to function. The mass rally held by the TMVP showed that they are taking the democratic path despite being sullied by the vested parties to undermine their sincerity.
According to an interview given by Pillayan to a pro-government weekly paper he had said, “There is no split between our leader Karuna Amman and me. These are made up stories. It is wrong to say our party members are clashing with each other and that we are in disarray. There is no truth in these stories. I played an important role in establishing our party. From the very beginning, I was entrusted with the responsibilities as second in command to Karuna Amman. My leader is now away from the country and I am managing the party's affairs. It is unfortunate that certain elements are trying to tarnish our party's image by carrying out a nasty campaign against us.”
“Our organisation has been created to progress on the democratic path” he had said. The real situation in Batticaloa and other parts in the East is lot different to that of the ruthless bandit leader V. Prabhakaran’s Vanni area. They do not believe in democracy and are not interested in talking and resolving the conflict amicably. The government slogan for the development in East “Negenahira Navodaya” is taking shape of ‘Negenahira Vinodaya’ (Joking East) and clearly it does not respect the people in the area.
The TMVP must change to meet the challenges and avoid foolish political motivations of the vested interests and engage in in-depth political activities and transform into a best democratic alternative for the Tamil Community. The Tamil community in Sri Lanka is facing leadership vacuum due to entrapping themselves with the LTTE and its folly dreams. If and when Rajapaksa regime eliminate the LTTE there could be an opening for a meaningful peace for Tamils. This may even lead to extending the conflict within the Sri Lankan communities. Until such time Tamils are allowed to live in dignity in Sri Lanka with the open hand of goodwill, and understanding by the majority Sinhalese peace will be meaningless.
The LTTE is progressively becoming an unwanted organisation. Prabakaran and his boys will never understand the reality and fast changing interactive globe village in which we have to live. He thinks he can achieve a separate state by following the outdated violent struggle.
But EPDP, TMVP and other Tamil political parties must work together and bring amity between themselves on a minimum work programme. Evidently the PLOTE, TULF and EPRF (Varadan) have established some working relationship to progress in this direction.
The EPDP is fully dependent on the government and have undermined other Tamil political parties.
According to reliable sources in the EPDP, the Leader of the EPDP has a hit list 400 people in Jaffna to be killed. About 200 of them are said to have been bumped off so far.
His intention is to finish the remaining before the next election so that he can have his freehand in Jaffna. The President will never blame him because he wants the EPDP leader to do the dirty work for him. These facts were confirmed by the EPDP leader at his Dickman’s Road residence in Colombo recently.
Government and the other pro-Government Tamil groups are carrying out a fight to finish job. This is a dangerous path for Sri Lanka, and will not help find a lasting solution to the problem.
Can TMVP make the difference? Can they create the conditions to develop democracy in the Tamil Community? They must find ways to forge a relationship with PLOTE, TULF and EPRLF (Varadan).
