(December, 06, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka Guardian)Following a request from the Ministry of Nation Building and Real Estate, the FSD has deployed its manual andmechanical clearance teams on an emergency clearance task in the Echelampattu area in Trincomalee District. The aim of the task is the safe return of more than 1,000 families, displaced by the recent conflict between Government security forces and the LTTE. Since June 2007, FSD teams have cleared more than 2.6 million squares metres, using a combination of machines and manual clearance and, in specific areas, battle area clearance techniques. So far, on this task, 225 anti-personnel mines and 16 items of unexploded ordnance have been recovered and safely destroyed.

The FSD teams had the honor to receive several official visits: Mister Yasushi Akashi the Representative of the Government of Japan, two delegations from the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Political Division 4, Human Security) and, recently, Brigadier General Paul Kaelin, Military Attaché for India Nepal and Sri Lanka. Brigadier General Kaelin visited our site accompanied by a high ranking Sri Lankan Army delegation. This is Brigadier General Kaelin's second visit, which illustrates his interest and support to the FSD clearance project in Sri Lanka.
