(December 23, Melbourne, Australia, Sri Lanka Guardian) In a meeting of the Melbourne Jaffna College Alumni held this afternoon, an unanimous resolution was passed expressing grave concerns about how the funding for Jaffna College is being disrupted by the Trustees of Jaffna College Funds who are obligated to provide for the needs of Jaffna College accoording to the founding mandate of this fiduciary organization.

"Particular references were made that the trustees have been attempting to make direct dealings with the employees of Jaffna College, Uduvil Girls College and a member of a dissident group instead of with the Board of Directors of Jaffna College and this was considered outrageous, arrogant, immoral, illegal and totally unacceptable."

The founding initiative of the Trustees of Jaffna College Funds came from Jaffna after the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) closed the Batticotta Seminary in 1855 and Jaffna College was founded by concerned citizens of the Jaffna District in 1872 and legistalively enacted as a body corporate in Sri Lanka, Ceylon at that time. Even the initial fund investment for the trust was collected from Jaffna.
At no time was the ABCFM, nor it's successor the United Church Board for World Missions (UBCWM) or its current successor, the Wider Church Ministries of the United Church of Christ (WCM-UCC) has had anything to do with the Trustees of Jaffna College Funds (TJCF). The TJCF is strictly a fiduciary trustee serving its beneficiary Jaffna College under the Trust Laws of the State of Massachusettes, USA.
And Jaffna College, contrary to the popular myth that was used by certain vested interests to advantage, is not a mission-founded organization. A certain Rufus Anderson from the ABCFM put an end to that in 1855 despite the protests of the local people and thereby denied a university to them that could have become a foremost educational institution in the whole of Asia.
Recently some efforts are being made by the trustees to convert the TJCF into a mission support agency seeking to revert back to the missionary links with Sri Lanka before 1855 ignoring the ghost of Rufus Anderson and that of his fellow traveler Thompson. This is being done without consulting with the Jaffna College Board of Directors, the only body from which the TJCF should be receiving directions.
The TJCF in this respect was primarily set up to obtain, hold and manage funds for the educational development of the people of the Jaffna District through Jaffna College which was set up in 1872.
Strong views were expressed this afternoon at the Melbourne gathering which was presided over by the Rev S Manopavan, the president of the local alumni and even suggestions were made to explore the possibility of a legal action against the trustees without any delay.
Particular references were made that the trustees have been attempting to make direct dealings with the employees of Jaffna College, Uduvil Girls College and a member of a dissident group instead of with the Board of Directors of Jaffna College and this was considered outrageous, arrogant, immoral, illegal and totally unacceptable.
The gathering was also addressed by the President of the Colombo Jaffna College Alumni Association, S Kandasamy and a member of the Board of Directors of Jaffna College, C D Chinnakone. Both expressed the view that the Jaffna College alumni in various parts of the world have become highly concerned about the recent developments especially the attempt by the Trustees of Jaffna College Funds to ignore the Board of Directors of Jaffna College and attempt to divert the school's resources in other directions that are beyond the mandate of the trust.
