“After JVP calling the budget as a whore draped in a Kandyan saree -how did they sleep with her?”
(December, 18, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Lakshman Kiriella , the UNP Parliamentarian addressing the media meeting at the UNP Media unit questioned why the JVP which bitterly criticized the Budget 2008 as a harlot draped in a kandyan saree and voted against it at the second reading suddenly took a ‘U’ turn at the final reading ? It is obvious that JVP fully aware that its popularity has hit rock bottom after last elections like the Rajapakse regime for betraying the voters and self seeking political opportunism ,and therefore fearing a miserable loss at elections following a Govt.’s defeat at the budget decided to abstain from voting.
Right along both the Govt. and the JVP have been play acting keeping the people who elected them into power in a fool’s paradise, he said. The JVP which was responsible to install this tyrannical corrupt regime must take the entire blame for the country’s present impasse and people’s sufferings. To escape from the wrath of the people they were critical of the Govt. and voted against the budget in the second reading. Then, when they realized that Rajapakse’s doom would be their doom too if there is an election, chose their characteristic selfish stance to continue in power with the equally power crazy Govt. kicking aside the people’s wishes and will, he exhorted.
This Govt.can no longer say that it has the people’s mandate to be in power as it is no longer the party at the last general election. It is a hotchpotch of many parties, the UNP (dissidents), the LSSP, the JHU and other alliances , each having ideologies contradictory to the other and pulling away in every direction.. Needless to say therefore that the Govt. cannot formulate any policy for the benefit of the people, neither can it solve any of the country’s problems . It has harboured all the corrupt politicians, country’s swindlers and shielding them to exist merely on a headcount majority; not on popularity, he added.
