(December, 26, California, Sri Lanka Guardian) In a recent Chicago Public Radio interview, Fred Abrahams, Senior Researcher for Emergencies, Human Rights Watch and Sunila Abeysekera of INFORM human rights documentation centre in Sri Lanka, attacked the Sri Lankan government on human rights violations. The interview was just another misinformation campaign conducted by anti-Sri Lankan NGOs. There was no mention whatsoever of any LTTE atrocities or human rights violations. On Karuna’s situation, Abrahams said that if Britain extradited Karuna to Sri Lanka, Colombo would not prosecute him, Instead, he said, Karuna’s murder was likely to be engineered.
Fred Abraham also mentioned that if justice were to be done, he would like to see Britain prosecute Karuna. This is the same Fred Abraham, who gave false information to the western media in regard to the conflict between Israel and Palestine, accusing the Israeli security forces of attacking civilian targets and accusing the Serbian security forces of human rights violations in Kosovo, while Kosovo rebels were killing innocent Serbs (he was a witness to the Slobodan Milosevic trial).
Sunila tried her best to convince the listeners that abductions are carried out only by the Sri Lankan security forces and the Karuna group. She also implied that the Sinhalese were the problem in the Eastern Province where Hindu Tamils and Muslims were living in harmony. She went on to say that her own life was in danger by the Sri Lankan security forces and that once Buddhist monks had tried to kill her in her office. Throughout the interview, neither of them mentioned any suicide bombings in the capital, recent bus bombings which claimed many civilian lives including children or the LTTE’s child recruitment.
The GOSL should recognise these so-called NGOs as a potential threat to national security and start taking necessary steps to prevent the dissemination of misinformation and keep a close eye on their propaganda campaigns.
